Senior Financial Institutions Underwriter

Markel’s European Underwriting team in Madrid is looking for a Senior Financial Institutions Underwriter to grow the Financial Institutions portfolio across Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

Responsibilities

- Underwrite and grow the Financial Institutions book of business profitably within the dedicated region
- Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships
- Extend and consolidate our footprint as a recognized insurance partner by assessing, proposing, and negotiating insurance conditions for large and midsize projects, with a primary focus on Liability
- Work closely with the Madrid team regarding clients and brokers
- Assess risks, coverage, terms, and conditions, driving related underwriting processes
- Collaborate with the General Manager of the Madrid office and the Liability department to ensure development and profitability of the portfolio
- Develop the underwriting strategy, guidelines, standards, processes, and tools;
develop new products and update existing ones as required
- Handle the referral business
- Interact with other functions (Business Development, Technical Underwriting, Claims) across the business
- Champion continuous improvements and continually work with the team to improve end‑to‑end processes and data accuracy
- Attend regular broker and client meetings, traveling as required to represent Markel





Qualifications
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, multi‑task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity and profitability
- Proven experience in an underwriting function and an understanding of the regional insurance market
- Effective interpersonal skills collaborating with partners within Spain and Southern Europe
- Proactive approach to identifying new business opportunities with a strong focus on profitable growth
- Fluency in Spanish and a good level of written and spoken English;
knowledge of Portugueseand/or Italian a plus
- Positive mindset and people‑oriented work ethic
- The legal right to live and work in Spain
