Position Research Engineer – Operational Air Quality Forecast (RE1) About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses Mare Nostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and hosts major HPC initiatives such as Euro HPC JU. BSC focuses on research, development, and management of information technologies to facilitate scientific progress, with more than 1,000 staff from 60 countries. Context And Mission The Earth Sciences Department, led by Prof. Francisco Doblas‑Reyes, specializes in air quality and atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction and climate services. The group contributes to forecasting activities such as MONARCH (operational model for atmospheric sand and dust), ICAP, CAMS, and the CALIOPE and CALIOPE‑urban air quality systems. The selected candidate will join the Models and Workflows team in the Computational Earth Sciences (CES) group, collaborating with the Atmospheric Composition and Earth System Services teams, and will maintain and improve operational air‑quality forecasting systems. Key Duties Implement, execute and monitor atmospheric numerical models (MONARCH, WRF‑ARW, CMAQ) in a high‑performance computing environment. Collaborate with computational earth‑science scientists to enhance system performance and reliability, coordinating with BSC HPC support. Work with atmospheric composition scientists to understand processes and model configuration. Maintain current operational air‑quality forecasting systems and develop new features based on user feedback. Requirements Education Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related discipline. Master’s degree preferred.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience Development and execution of scientific applications on parallel computers. Experience with UNIX/Linux environments. Python programming and/or scripting languages (bash, etc.). Version control in a collaborative environment (SVN, Git). Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience Previous experience with NWP or climate modelling and/or operations. Familiarity with scientific workflows on large HPC systems, including parallel programming techniques and workflow managers. Experience with continuous integration tools (e.G., Jenkins). Understanding of HPC computer architecture issues. Experience with scientific software and tools (R, Python Numpy, Scipy, etc.). Knowledge of coding and documentation best practices and standards (valued). Competences Ability to build strong relations with Earth and computer scientists. Initiative, prioritization, and ability to work under deadlines and pressure. Excellent problem‑solving skills. Independent and teamwork oriented. Effective communication in an international, interdisciplinary environment. Conditions Full‑time contract (35 h/week) with versátil working hours. Open‑ended contract linked to project and budget duration. Location: BSC, Earth Sciences Department. Benefits: training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, relocation support. Holidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per collective agreement. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting date: ASAP.
