Main Purpose:
As part of the growth and expansion process of the Biotechnology area at our Cabrera de Mar (Barcelona) facilities, a new position is being created: Plant Pathology Project Lead
Semillas Fitó is looking for someone responsible for the strategic development and management of plant pathology projects aimed to assist breeding programs in developing new vegetable varieties with greater resistance to diseases and pests.
Together with the Plant Pathology team, they will be responsible for planning, managing, and supervising several research and operational activities within the plant pathology (including viruses, fungi, bacteria, nematodes and arthropods), routine testing,
diagnostics and disease monitoring, with a focus on developing, implementi and routine applying of methodologies to support the breeding process.
This person will report to the Plant Science and Pathology Lead.
Key Tasks:
Lead plant pathology research projects and support implementation of disease testing methodologies to support breeding teams Design and execute laboratory and filed experiments for the identification and characterization of pathogens and/or screening plant germplasm for resistance
Develop and implement protocols for pathogen monitoring and routine disease testing for the vegetable crops.
Efficiently collaborate with other areas (such us biotech, breeding and quality assurance)to identify genetic disease resistance and develop new varieties with improved resistance.
Secure strategic external partnerships with, academic and research institutions and service providers to stay up-to-date on the latest research and technologies related to plant pathology
Together with the Farming team, manage the facilities where the different bioassays are carried out: plan,
organize, conduct, and provide follow-up for daily work, including sowings, transplanting, samplings, and trial removal.
Participate in scientific conferences and take the initiative to stay up-to-date with literature and new technologies in the relevant areas of assignment and professional interest.
Develop and implement new diagnostics techniches, such as qPCR and ELISA, for pathogen identification and characterization.

Requirements
You are the talent that we are looking for if...
PhD or MSC in Plant Pathology, Biology, Agricultural Engineer or releated fields.
Thorough practical and theoretical knowledge of plant-pathogen interaction, pathogen identification and monitoring (viruses, fungi, bacteria, nematodes, arthropods) & the pests and disease resistances in Solanaceae and Cucurbits.
Experience with molecular techniques, such us qPCR, for pathogen diagnostics.
Hands-on experience with service-oriented disease testing.
3+ years of experience in the field of plant pathology.
Good English language skills are required
Proficient in office tools (especially Excel and databases) & data analysis.
Availability of own vehicle
This key points will be valuable:
Experience in managing a scientific and/or technical team.
Experience in the seed/plant breeding sector.
Spanish language fluent will be a plus.
