iPronics is seeking a PIC Architectures Engineer to join the PIC Architectures team within our Photonics Department, working on large-scale silicon photonics optical circuit switches. You will work on the design and simulation of our switch architectures and programmable photonic circuits. A good part of the work also involves developing our in-house software tools. The position is primarily on-site at our Valencia office, with the possibility of flexible remote work.
Main Responsibilities
As part of the PIC Architectures team, you will define, model and validate the photonic circuit architectures behind our optical switches, from topology and routing to circuit performance, and help develop the software tools that support this work.
Key responsibilities include
- Developing and maintaining our in-house Python tools for PIC architecture modelling, simulation and verification, following good software practices (version control, testing, documentation).
- Designing and evaluating optical switch architectures and programmable photonic circuits.
- Developing advanced circuit-level simulations of our photonic integrated circuits, including WDM and multiplexing/demultiplexing systems, to predict insertion loss, optical crosstalk, and wavelength and polarization dependence.
- Developing routing, path-finding and switch-configuration algorithms for optical switches and programmable photonic circuits.
- Analyzing the impact of non-idealities (fabrication variations, thermal effects, control errors) on circuit performance, and supporting calibration strategies.
- Working closely with design, test and software teams, comparing simulation results with lab measurements and delivering clear technical reports.
Desired Skills & Experience
- MSc in Telecommunication Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, with a focus on integrated photonics. PhD is a plus.
- 2-3 years of experience in photonic circuit modelling, optical switching or programmable photonics, in industry or research.
- Strong software development background in Python: object-oriented design, clean and modular code, numerical libraries (NumPy/SciPy) and maintaining medium-to-large codebases. Experience with other languages is a plus.
- Experience with photonic circuit simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical INTERCONNECT, VPIphotonics, or Python-based S-matrix solvers).
- Good understanding of integrated photonic building blocks (MZIs, couplers, phase shifters, crossings) and how they combine at circuit level.
- Experience with Git, testing frameworks (e.g., pytest) and collaborative software development (code reviews, CI).
- Reliable, proactive, and self-motivated, with excellent communication skills.
- Fluent in English (C1 level or higher).
Nice to have
- Strong mathematical background (linear algebra, graph theory, combinatorics).
- Knowledge of routing algorithms and switching network theory (e.g., rearrangeable and non-blocking networks).
- Familiarity with graph libraries and Python packaging and environment tools.
- Experience with calibration and control of programmable photonic circuits.
What we offer:
- Permanent full-time position
- Adaptable working hours
- December 24th and 31st off
- One extra day off during your birthday month
- Private health insurance and life insurance
- Pension plan included
- Flexible compensation plan (restaurant tickets, transport, and childcare vouchers)
