Not funded by a EU programmeAboutOutlineThe research group SANS (Statistical Analysis of Networks and Systems, ) looks for motivated candidates to pursue a doctoral thesis in the “Computer Architecture" PhD programme ( … ), in Barcelona, Spain, by applying to our competitive PhD fellowship programme. This PhD fellowship programme grants pre-doctoral contracts for 3 years to carry out a doctoral thesis at Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain.
During the doctoral thesis, the candidate is expected to develop new AI/ML methods —Discriminative AI, Generative AI, and Reinforcement Learning— for the analysis of IoT sensor data, with applications in environmental monitoring (air quality, urban microclimate) and industrial applications (anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, digital twins).
The group has an advanced data monitoring system based on IoT devices, which allows them to have datasets of great value for research. Although the candidate will not be responsible for the development of the monitoring system, it is expected that he/she will be involved in tasks related to experimental deployments,



so that he/she can optimize the data that are of interest for his/her research.
What is fundedThe fellowship is 25.456,20 Euros/year. After taxes, it results in approximately 1400 Euros/month in 14 monthly payments.
Registration fees in the doctoral program are included in the fellowship. The candidate only pays for medical insurance (around 150 euros/year).
DurationThe fellowship would start in April 2027, with a duration of 4 years, and it is under the umbrella of the National project programme PID2025.
We are looking for candidates with a solid background in applied mathematics, machine/deep learning, statistics, or signal processing techniques. Degrees we are considering include (but are not limited to): applied mathematics, physics, or engineering (computer science, electrical engineering, telecommunication engineering, etc.). We are looking for candidates with a strong research orientation and interested in the application of research to solve problems of practical interest.
