The Opportunity We are looking for an experienced and passionate R&D; Senior Control Engineer – GFM & Data Center Applications to join our Power Conversion Solutions team at Hitachi Energy in Seville, Spain. In this role, you will play a key part in designing and validating advanced control solutions for power electronic converters, with a particular focus on Grid-Forming technologies, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and critical Data Center applications. How You'll Make An Impact
• Design and develop advanced control architectures and algorithms for power converters, BESS, and Data Center applications.
• Develop Grid-Forming (GFM) and Grid-Following (GFL) control strategies, including frequency and voltage regulation, islanding, and Black Start capabilities.
• Model and optimise current, voltage, active/reactive power, and DC bus control loops to ensure system stability and performance.
• Implement real-time control algorithms in C and develop simulation and analysis tools using MATLAB/Simulink and Python.
• Validate control solutions through simulation, SIL/HIL testing, laboratory experiments, and converter-level testing.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D; teams to ensure compliance with grid codes, troubleshoot technical challenges, and support system integration. Your Background




• Master's degree or equivalent in Electrical, Electronics, Automation, Industrial Engineering, or a related field, with a strong focus on control systems.
• Solid experience in dynamic systems modelling, control theory, and power converter control, including GFM and GFL strategies.
• Strong knowledge of power system stability, BESS, microgrids, islanding operation, and grid support functionalities.
• Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD/EMTDC (or equivalent simulation tools), and C and Python programming.
• Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) validation, preferably Typhoon HIL or RT-BOX, and laboratory testing.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, advanced English, and the ability to collaborate in an international environment.
