PARTICLE DETECTOR TECHNOLOGIST — PhD REQUIRED

(PhD required on Neutron and/or Particle Detection, experience on Nuclear Fusion and ITER Technology)

Company Description The company SGENIA INDUSTRIAL develops engineering and technology solutions for the industrial, energy and environmental sectors. Our activities include developing products and processes for industrial applications, delivering engineering projects with final delivery of systems and components to our costumers.

As a Particle Detector Technologist at SGENIA INDUSTRIAL, you will be responsible for researching, developing and implementing technologies for the detection of neutrons and/or other particles. Your work will cover prototype design and evaluation, integration into measurement systems, and the deployment, commissioning, characterisation and calibration of detector equipment.

You will also participate in nuclear fusion programmes and contribute to technology development for ITER through SGENIA INDUSTRIAL’s projects, applying your expertise in instrumentation, experimental validation, integration and calibration.

Working closely with colleagues in electronics, software and engineering, you will help translate research results into practical technological solutions for industrial and fusion applications.

About ITER: ITER is an international fusion research project under construction in southern France. Its experimental tokamak will use powerful magnetic fields to confine hot plasma. The project aims to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy and advance the technologies needed for future fusion power plants. Learn more: https://www.iter.org/

Key Responsibilities

- Research,

select and develop detector technologies according to the requirements of each application.
- Design and validate prototypes, integrating sensors, readout electronics and data acquisition systems.
- Characterise detector efficiency, resolution, noise and stability, and develop calibration procedures that include measurement uncertainty assessment.
- Contribute to nuclear fusion programmes and technology development for ITER, supporting design, testing, integration and validation activities.
- Participate in equipment deployment and commissioning, verify performance and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Prepare technical specifications, test procedures and reports, ensuring measurement traceability and clear documentation throughout development.

Requirements

- A completed PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Physics, Engineering or a closely related discipline. This is an essential requirement.
- Specialist knowledge and experimental experience in particle detectors, nuclear instrumentation or radiation detection technologies.
- Practical experience with at least one technology for detecting muons, neutrons or other particles, including detector characterisation and calibration.
- Knowledge of the interaction of radiation with matter, electronic instrumentation,

signal processing and data acquisition.
- Scientific programming and data analysis skills using Python, C++ or equivalent tools.
- Ability to work independently, document results rigorously and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
- English proficiency sufficient to work with specialist technical documentation and communicate scientific and engineering results.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

- Experience in nuclear fusion research, fusion instrumentation or technology development for ITER or other major scientific facilities.
- Experience with scintillation detectors, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), gaseous detectors or semiconductor detectors.
- Knowledge of simulation tools such as Geant4 or MCNP and data analysis frameworks such as ROOT.
- Experience in neutron detection, neutron/gamma discrimination, particle track reconstruction or muon tomography.
- Knowledge of FPGAs, embedded systems or instrumentation electronics development.
- Training in metrology and radiation protection, and experience transferring research developments into industrial applications.

Location and Employment Terms The position will be based in Spain (Madrid). The duties involved will require physical presence at the workplace.

How to Apply

Please apply through this job posting and attach your CV, specifying your doctoral research area and your experience in detector development, deployment and calibration. Where applicable, please also highlight your involvement in nuclear fusion programmes or technology development for major scientific facilities.
