AstraZeneca seeks an Associate Director, Data Scientist to develop and deploy AI and machine learning methods for clinical trial design, patient selection, biomarker strategy, and safety evaluation. The role bridges clinical development, regulatory, and data science teams to advance the late-stage BioPharmaceuticals pipeline across cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, respiratory, and immunology programs.

Responsibilities

- Develop, evaluate, and deploy reusable AI and machine learning methods for clinical trial design, dose optimization, biomarker discovery, and safety signal detection
- Lead end-to-end delivery of data science projects from problem framing through validation, implementation, and adoption by study teams
- Partner with Clinical Development, Biometrics, and Regulatory colleagues to integrate AI and analytical strategy into study design workflows
- Build reusable, well-documented data products including pipelines, packages, and applications with software engineering rigor
- Acquire, curate, and quality-control datasets for model training, benchmarking,



and evaluation in clinical and regulatory contexts

Requirements

- PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Biomedical Informatics, or related quantitative field; MSc with exceptional computational background considered
- 2–5 years post-PhD or equivalent in AI/ML method development with demonstrated impact in clinical or drug development settings
- Deep hands-on experience with biological data: molecular, imaging, or clinical text data types
- Technical expertise in foundation models, fine-tuning, Bayesian inference, temporal/longitudinal modelling, or multimodal integration
- Proven ability to lead end-to-end data science projects from problem definition through deployment and adoption
- Software engineering mindset with emphasis on reproducibility, documentation, and maintainability
- Experience embedding analytical methods into clinical workflows and regulatory settings
