- Software development for Supercritical Fluids and Non-equilibrium thermochemistry (R2) Closing Date Saturday, 31 October, 2026 Reference: 465_26_CASE_PTG_R2 Job title: Researcher
- Software development for Supercritical Fluids and Non-equilibrium thermochemistry (R2) About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center
- Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D; into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries. Look At The BSC Experience BSC-CNS YouTube Channel Let's stay connected with BSC Folks We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under-represented sex will be favoured. We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences. If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team. Context And Mission High-fidelity numerical simulation of turbulent, high-speed, and reacting flows has become a cornerstone of innovation in aerospace, clean mobility, energy, and safety-critical systems, yet remains one of the most computationally demanding challenges in computational science. Applications such as hypersonic flight, spacecraft re-entry, advanced turbomachinery, cryogenic propulsion, and hydrogen safety operate in extreme regimes characterised by high Reynolds and Mach numbers, strong thermochemical non-equilibrium, shocks, multiphase interactions, and tightly coupled physical processes. However, the extreme scale separation inherent to turbulent flows implies that simulations at realistic Reynolds numbers require resolving billions to hundreds of billions of degrees of freedom, making access to leadership-class and exascale computing resources a strict prerequisite even for idealised configurations. In this context, there is need for production-grade simulation capability that supports both direct numerical simulations and large-eddy simulation within a unified, MPI/GPU software framework. In addition to delivering predictive simulations, generating high-quality, physics-consistent datasets for the training, validation, and continued development of machine-learning models, enabling data-driven turbulence closures, reduced-order models, and hybrid ML–physics approaches is a key aspect of the approach. The Primary Objective Of The Position Is To Develop And Integrate GPU-accelerated Thermochemical And Thermophysical Modelling Capabilities For High Enthalpy, Non-equilibrium, And Extreme Condition Flows, Optimised For Exascale Simulations. The Work Will Involve
• Developing GPU-optimised thermochemical kernels for high-throughput evaluation of multi-temperature thermodynamic properties, including partition functions, specific heats, and enthalpies.
• Developing robust multi-temperature and finite-rate chemistry models for high enthalpy flows, including dissociation, and vibrational relaxation.
• Designing scalable batched evaluation strategies capable of processing millions of thermochemical and thermophysical queries per timestep, while promoting efficient memory management.
• Developing robust numerical methods for temperature inversion, stiff chemical kinetics, including adaptive Newton solvers, bracketing strategies, ill-posed state detection, and recovery mechanisms.

• Integrating and accelerating thermophysical property models for cryogenic, near-critical, and supercritical fluids with a focus on GPU acceleration and mixed-precision computing.
• Ensuring scalability, portability, numerical robustness, and performance across leadership-class and exascale HPC architectures through MPI/GPU parallelization and optimized computational kernels This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge developments at the intersection of aerospace engineering, computational physics, and high-performance computing, with direct relevance to future propulsion technologies. The research team that the applicant will be involved is the Propulsion Technologies Group at CASE Department of BSC.
