Job Reference 464_26_CASE_PTG_R3 Position Researcher
- Development of computational methods for high-speed reacting flows (R3) Closing Date Saturday, 31 October, 2026 Reference: 464_26_CASE_PTG_R3 Job title: Researcher
- Development of computational methods for high-speed reacting flows (R3) About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center
- Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D; into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries. Look At The BSC Experience BSC-CNS YouTube Channel Let's stay connected with BSC Folks We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under-represented sex will be favoured. We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences. If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team. Context And Mission The design of next-generation aerospace propulsion systems relies on understanding complex compressible flows, including shock waves, boundary layers, mixing process, and recirculation regions. These phenomena govern the performance of systems such as scramjets and gas turbines, yet their characterisation remains challenging due to the computational cost of detailed simulations and limited availability of experimental measurements. Recovering complete flow fields from sparse observations offers opportunities to improve the understanding and prediction of these systems. Advances in scientific machine learning, numerical simulations and high-performance computing enable new approaches that combine physical models with data. Physics-informed neural networks incorporate governing equations into the learning process, while graph neural networks provide architectures for representing spatial relationships on irregular meshes. Together, these approaches support the development of reconstruction methods that combine computational fluid dynamics with heterogeneous observations. The Primary Objective Of The Position Is To Develop And Validate The Physics-informed Machine Learning Framework For Compressible Flow Reconstruction, With Applications To Aerospace Propulsion. The Work Will Involve
• Developing learning methods based on multilayer perceptrons and graph neural networks.
• Incorporating governing equations into model training.
• Reconstructing flow fields from sparse velocity measurements and wall pressure taps.
• Implementing efficient sampling, optimisation, and GPU-accelerated training workflows.
• Validating reconstructed fields agains numerical and experimental data, including assessment of sensitivity to noise and limited observations. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge developments at the intersection of machine learning, computational fluid dynamics, and high-performance computing, supporting the integration and simulation and measurement data for future propulsion technologies. The successful candidate will join the Propulsion Technologies Group within the CASE Department of BSC.
