Job Title: Catalan Linguistic Expert (ca) – Text Normalization Evaluation Engagement Type: Short-term Contract / Freelance Project Duration: Less than 1 month Expected Commitment: Approximately 20–30 hours per week Compensation: Competitive hourly rate, based on experience and expertise Work Arrangement: Remote About the Project We are looking for a Catalan Linguistic Expert to support a short-term Text Normalization (TN) evaluation project. The project focuses on determining whether a text normalization system correctly converts numbers, symbols, abbreviations, units of measurement, and other written expressions into forms that can be read aloud naturally in Catalan. The expert will help ensure that normalized outputs are linguistically correct, natural, and consistent with real-world Catalan usage, while accounting for relevant regional varieties and pronunciation conventions.
Key Responsibilities
• Linguistic Evaluation: Review normalized Catalan text against the original source and determine whether the output is correct and natural when read aloud.
• Dispute Resolution: Resolve ambiguous or disputed annotation cases and provide expert recommendations to maintain consistent quality standards.
• Pattern Identification: Identify recurring normalization errors and linguistic edge cases involving numbers, prices, percentages, dates, quantities, abbreviations, units, symbols, and URLs.
• Guideline Development: Record linguistic principles, acceptable reading variants, and recommended corrections to establish a consistent evaluation framework.
• Quality Consultation: Support annotators and quality reviewers by explaining complex linguistic cases and providing clear, evidence-based judgments.
• Rule Optimization: Recommend improvements to annotation guidelines and normalization conventions based on presente Catalan usage and recurring evaluation findings.
• Regional Variation Assessment: Evaluate outputs with consideration for relevant Catalan varieties, including differences in pronunciation,
vocabulary, and language conventions across regions. Requirements
• Native-level proficiency in Catalan, preferably as a native Catalan speaker or someone with equivalent linguistic competence.
• An academic background in linguistics or a related field, such as phonetics, phonology, dialectology, applied linguistics, or language studies.
• Strong knowledge of Catalan grammar, pronunciation, spelling conventions, and natural spoken language usage.
• Familiarity with regional varieties of Catalan and their relevant pronunciation and language conventions.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to articulate linguistic judgments clearly and consistently.
• Excellent attention to detail when assessing written expressions and their spoken representations.
• Ability to work independently and commit approximately 20–30 hours per week throughout the project period. Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in linguistic annotation, language data quality assurance, text normalization, speech technology, NLP, or language model evaluation.
• Experience in linguistic research, language teaching, proofreading, editing, or language consulting.
• Previous experience developing annotation guidelines, reviewing language data, or adjudicating disputed cases.
• Familiarity with Catalan orthographic standards, pronunciation conventions, and text-to-speech or spoken-language processing.
What We Offer
• Competitive hourly compensation reflecting your expertise and experience.
• Flexible remote working arrangements.
• An opportunity to contribute to the quality and development of language technology for Catalan.
How to Apply
Please submit your CV or LinkedIn profile, highlighting your Catalan language expertise, linguistic qualifications, and relevant experience in annotation, language research, quality assurance, teaching, or speech and language technology.
