Platform Lead – Starburst Enterprise

Position Overview We are seeking a hands-on Starburst Enterprise Platform Lead to own the technical operation, reliability and continuous improvement of AstraZeneca R&D;’s Starburst platform. The role retains the full engineering scope of the Platform Engineer position while adding technical leadership, service ownership and accountability for a support team of 2–3 engineers. You will lead business-as-usual operations—including incident resolution, problem management, version upgrades, infrastructure and security patching, feature enhancements, onboarding and performance optimisation—across a Kubernetes-based deployment with an RDS backend.

You will act as the senior technical point of contact for internal customers and partners, work directly with the external Starburst vendor, and translate service needs into a prioritised, sustainable platform roadmap.

Exceptional communication is central to success: you must be able to listen actively, build trust, explai of prescription medicines, primarily for the treatment of cardiovascular, renal and metabolic, respiratory and immunological, oncological and rare diseases. Key Responsibilities As Platform Lead, you will be accountable for the technical health of the service and for creating the conditions in which the support team can operate safely, efficiently and with clear priorities. Technlatforms including Immuta, Apache Ranger, Collibra, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Redshift, Hive, Iceberg, dbt, AWS Lambda, AWS Glue and Power BI.

Experience designing or operating highly available, secure and observable cloud services, withhealthcare, clinical research or another regulated environment. Understanding of data virtualisation, data mesh, data products, metadata, lineage and governed self-service access patterns. Familiarity with IT service management, operational readiness, service-level indicators and continuous improvement practices.

Beneficial Experience Exposure to other data virtualisation or distributed SQL technologies such as Dremio, Trino, Presto and Athena.

Experience establishing engineering standards, reference architectures, reusable platform capabilities or internal developer platforms.

Experience with FinOps, platform scalability, disaster recovery, service continuity and sustainable technology delivery.
