Protection & Control Design - Senior Electrical Engineer
About the client
The client is a UK specialist engineering and design consultancy headquartered in the United Kingdom. The client also has offices in Spain, India and Pakistan. They deliver compliant infrastructure design across electricity, gas, water, civils, drainage, renewables and earthing, from early feasibility through to detailed, adoptable design. The EHV team works on substation and connection projects up to 400kV for Transmission Owners, all UK Distribution Network Operators, IDNOs, ICPs and private clients including renewable, battery storage and data centre developers. Role Purpose
You will own the P&C; design process from protection philosophy through to construction issue, sign off designs as the responsible designer, and lead a team of engineers producing designs that are accepted first time by NGET, the DNOs and other approving parties. This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will still produce and check design work yourself, while building the team's capability, standardising our approach and representing the company to clients and network operators on P&C; matters. Key Responsibilities
Technical design and assurance
Protection philosophy:
Develop and agree protection and control philosophies and design basis documents for transmission (275kV and 400kV), EHV distribution (33kV and 132kV) and HV customer connections. Scheme design:
Lead the production of protection single line diagrams, protection block diagrams, tripping and intertripping matrices, AC and DC schematics, panel general arrangements and wiring diagrams. Instrument transformers:
Specify and verify CT and VT requirements, including ratio, class, knee point, burden and dimensioning calculations to IEC 61869 and the relevant TO or DNO specification. Protection studies and settings:
Produce or review protection grading, settings calculations and relay setting files, and coordinate settings with the network operator at the point of connection. Control and automation:
Oversee substation control system, IEC 61850, SCADA, RTU and telecoms interface design,
including signal lists and interface schedules with the network operator's control centre. Connection compliance:
Support G99 and G100 compliance for generation and storage connections, including Loss of Mains, export limitation, intertripping and operational metering arrangements. Design approval:
Act as checker and approver for P&C; deliverables, issuing designs for construction and managing submissions and comment responses through NGET, SSEN Transmission, SP Transmission and DNO design approval processes. Specifications and quantities:
Prepare equipment and relay specifications, technical schedules, bills of quantities and technical evaluations of supplier tenders. Construction and commissioning support:
Support FAT, SAT and commissioning, review commissioning documentation, and resolve site queries, technical queries and design changes. Standards, safety and quality
Ensure designs comply with the Grid Code, Distribution Code, NGET Technical Specifications and Relevant Electrical Standards, ENA Engineering Recommendations and Technical Specifications, DNO design policies, and applicable BS EN and IEC standards. Discharge Designer duties under CDM 2015, including design risk assessments and contribution to project health and safety files. Own company's P&C; design standards, templates and code of practice, reviewing them at least annually and whenever TO or DNO specifications change. Track changes to network operator specifications and industry requirements, attend technical forums where relevant, and brief the wider business. Leadership and delivery
Lead, mentor and develop P&C; engineers and graduates, including those in the client's Islamabad and Karachi offices, and support their progress towards professional registration. Plan and allocate P&C; design resources, and manage technical quality,
programme and budget for the P&C; scope on each project. Coordinate with primary design, civils, earthing, cables and SCADA teams to manage technical interfaces and avoid design clashes. Act as the technical point of contact for clients, NGET, other TOs, DNOs and equipment suppliers on P&C; matters. Support bids and proposals with technical scope, methodology, resource estimates and risk assessment. Contribute to recruitment, technical training and the company's internal upskilling sessions. About the Candidate
Degree in Electrical or Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or equivalent. Chartered Engineer (CEng) through the IET, or working towards it with a clear route to registration. Typically 7 or more years in protection and control design for UK networks, with substantial experience at 132kV and above. Proven track record of checking, approving and signing off P&C; designs for construction. Direct design experience on transmission substations up to 400kV for NGET, SSEN Transmission or SP Transmission, and on DNO EHV substations for one or more of UKPN, NGED, SPEN, SSEN Distribution, Northern Powergrid or Electricity North West. Working knowledge of distance, differential, overcurrent, earth fault, busbar, breaker fail and transformer protection schemes, and of protection relays from major manufacturers such as Siemens, GE Vernova, Hitachi Energy and SEL. Experience in CT and VT specification and dimensioning. Experience with G99 connections for generation and battery energy storage. Clear written and verbal communication, with the confidence to defend a design position with network operators and clients. Experience on contestable connection works delivered through an ICP or IDNO route. Experience of IEC 61850 station bus and process bus architectures. Protection study experience in DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP or similar. Experience on private HV and EHV networks, such as data centres, renewables and industrial sites. Experience managing offshore or multi-site design teams. Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN or similar design tools.
