At the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC
- Barcelona), the Nanoionics and Fuel Cells group works on solid-state ionic materials and devices for energy conversion and storage, from the nanoscale design of functional oxides to the fabrication and testing of solid oxide cells for hydrogen and energy storage. We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in protonics to join hyPROMISE, a new European coordinate project of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. Nine European research and industrial partners are working together to take solid-state proton-conducting cells from laboratory-scale devices to robust kW-class stacks. You will lead IREC’s core experimental work in the project. This covers the design and electrochemical assessment of proton-conducting materials, the validation of advanced manufacturing routes, and the testing of large-area cells and stacks. You will work across the full materials-to-stack value chain with leading academic and industrial partners. You will also contribute to the technical coordination of the project and build an independent research profile in energy conversion technologies. What you will do
• Develop and characterise proton-conducting thin films and electrodes for protonic ceramic cells
• Support the implementation of advanced manufacturing routes in cell architectures
• Carry out the electrochemical testing of large-area cells and stacks
• Contribute to project coordination, supervise students,



and publish and present results in journals and at international conferences What we are looking for Essential:
• PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering or a closely related field
• Research experience in protonics and proton-conducting oxides, with relevant publications
• Proven hands-on experience in the electrochemical characterisation of protonic materials
• Ability to plan and carry out independent research and to work in an international team
• Good written and spoken English Desirable:
• Experience fabricating and electrochemically testing ceramic proton-conducting cells (PCFC/PCEC, symmetric and full cells)
• Experience testing large-area cells or stacks
• Experience with European collaborative projects, project reporting, mentoring students, or building measurement and data-analysis tools
