Research challenge Modern security ecosystems rely on large-scale deployments of sensors, cameras, actuators, and intelligent devices. Managing these systems efficiently requires new approaches capable of balancing performance, connectivity, and energy consumption. The goal of this PhD is to develop autonomous energy optimization mechanisms for distributed sensor and actuator networks, allowing devices to dynamically adapt their computation and communication capabilities according to environmental conditions, security requirements, and available energy resources. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with Verisure, providing access to relevant industrial use cases and the opportunity to validate solutions in realistic operational environments. Research topics During the PhD, you will investigate state-of-the-art technologies including:
• Adaptive Computing and Communications: Develop mechanisms enabling intelligent devices to autonomously adjust their operation according to context, workload, and application requirements.
• Intelligent Energy Harvesting: Explore innovative techniques to harvest ambient energy and optimize its utilization through adaptive energy management strategies.
• Edge and Distributed Computing: Design architectures that move intelligence closer to the network edge, reducing latency, communication overhead, and power consumption.
• Embedded Artificial Intelligence:
Develop low-power AI solutions leveraging hardware accelerators and specialized coprocessors for on-device intelligence.
• Next-Generation IoT Architectures: Create resilient, scalable, and energy-aware architectures for large-scale distributed security systems.
