Head of AI | Regulated Digital Health | £150,000 to £200,000 plus equity | Remote, UK or Europe
Every year around 2 million babies are stillborn and 287,000 women die from preventable causes in pregnancy and childbirth. Most of those deaths are not a lack of medicine, but risks nobody saw in time. I'm recruiting the Head of AI for the company building the Virtual Midwife: a digital companion that spots pregnancy risk earlier and supports women through to birth, built as a Class IIb medical device for the UK, US and Africa. The models you build will decide which risks get seen in time. The company is around 18 months old, 18 people, remote across the UK and US. Three live products, one already a Class I device, ISO 13485 certified. They've recently secured £10m+ from Wellcome Leap and the Gates Foundation, not VC, with about three years of runway and some of the biggest partners in integral health already collaborating. The Head of AI role
You'd report to the CTO, who built and exited a digital health business with the CEO and still codes. The Chief Medical Officer is a professor of maternal and fetal medicine who ran Wellcome Leap's $50m In Utero programme, and her clinical judgement shapes what gets built. There's no AI function yet. You'd be building it from the first line of code, and deciding what it becomes. What you'd get to do:
Decide what gets built first. Risk prediction, personalisation, how the programme adapts to each woman. Nobody has made those calls yet, so they're yours. Build the data and MLOps foundations properly, the way you've always wished someone had before you arrived.
Take models through UK Class IIb and US Class II. The regulator becomes your audience, and your evidence is what gets this to women who need it. Hire your first two people, a Senior ML Engineer and a Data Scientist, and shape how the team works. It's a hands-on lead role in a small company, not a research post or a management layer. What you'd bring:
You've led applied machine learning in a regulated field, such as digital health, medical software or life sciences, and taken models from research into reliable production use more than once. You're deeply hands-on with ML, statistics, evaluation and MLOps, and you've worked with real health data: missing values, imbalanced groups, data that shifts over time. You've tested models across different populations and dealt with bias, calibration and uncertainty, and you know what evidence a regulator expects for higher-risk medical software (ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304 territory). You've used generative AI and retrieval in practice and know where they belong and where they don't. You can lead a small team while staying the credible one on hard technical calls, and explain AI clearly to clinicians, regulators, customers and investors. Women's health, pregnancy, wearables, clinical prediction, FHIR or UK-to-US regulatory work is a real plus, not a requirement. Package
£150,000 to £200,000 base plus 2-3% equity. Remote-first, UK or Europe within two to three hours of UK time, flexible hours, occasional travel. Private healthcare, a learning budget, conference travel, pension and generous leave.
