Android Software Engineer – Payments SDK & Apps
Location: Spain (Madrid preferred) | Fully remote or hybrid | Multicultural team
------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an Android Software Engineer who wants to make a real impact and help take our payments platform to the next level, delivering value from day one.
Handpoint is singularly focused on providing the best payments platform for Point of Sale (POS) SaaS providers. We enable our partners to seamlessly integrate payment terminals through cloud-based and native integrations, including Android SDK, JavaScript SDK, Windows SDK, and REST APIs.
In this role, you'll work on two closely related fronts:
- Our Android/Kotlin Payments SDK, used by partners to run secure, reliable card-present payment flows on smartPOS and mPOS devices
- Android payment applications built on top of that SDK
Working on both gives you a unique view of the SDK from the inside and from the perspective of the developers who consume it.
------------------------------------------------------------
ROLE SCOPE
SDK-first ownership, with occasional backend collaboration to ensure end-to-end reliability:
- SDK & integrations: API design, device/payment flows, compatibility, quality, releases, and building Android apps on top of the SDK
- Platform enablement: coordination with backend teams, debugging end-to-end issues, improving observability and developer experience
------------------------------------------------------------
TECH STACK
- Languages: Kotlin (primary), Java (secondary), TypeScript (nice to have)
- Android app development: Jetpack Compose, MVVM, Kotlin Coroutines and Flow, Hilt/Dagger for dependency injection
- Android SDK/library development: Gradle, packaging/publishing, backwards compatibility
- Architecture & APIs: Client library design, clean architecture principles, REST integrations
- Payments context: Card-present flows, device integrations (smartPOS/mPOS), transaction lifecycle (sale, refund, pre-auth, reversals)
- CI/CD & Tooling: Jenkins, GitHub Actions, automated tests and release pipelines
------------------------------------------------------------
ENGINEERING CULTURE
We care deeply about software quality, and just as importantly, about the people who build it.
- Our development workflow relies on a fully automated CI/CD pipeline covering builds and multiple layers of testing, including unit and integration tests. This allows you to focus on writing clean, robust, and well-tested code.
- You will join a team that values craftsmanship, collaboration, continuous improvement, and open, respectful communication.
- English is our primary language of communication.
------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design and evolve a developer-friendly SDK API, with stable contracts and clear versioning
- Develop and maintain Android payment apps built on our SDK: build new features, fix issues and keep the codebase healthy and up to date
- Build modern, responsive UIs with Jetpack Compose following MVVM and clean architecture
- Act as the bridge between app development and the SDK: feed real-world app needs back into SDK design and validate SDK changes in real apps before release
- Own features end-to-end: from design and implementation to documentation, release, and production support
- Improve reliability and observability: logging, correlation IDs, error semantics, and troubleshooting tooling
- Maintain compatibility across device models and OS versions, and implement safe deprecations
- Build and maintain sample apps and integration guides for partners
- Collaborate with backend/platform teams to debug real-world scenarios and improve end-to-end behavior
------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE (FIRST 90 DAYS)
1. Become productive in the SDK and app codebases and their release processes; ship at least one meaningful improvement
2. Improve an SDK or app area related to reliability, error handling or observability
3. Contribute to a partner-facing artifact (docs, sample app, integration checklist) that reduces support load
------------------------------------------------------------
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong proficiency with Kotlin and Android development fundamentals
- Hands-on experience building production apps with Jetpack Compose
- Solid understanding of MVVM architecture
- Experience with Kotlin Coroutines (and Flow) for asynchronous programming
- Experience with dependency injection using Hilt and/or Dagger
- Experience building or maintaining libraries/SDKs or shared components (public APIs, compatibility, versioning)
- Solid software engineering practices: SOLID, design patterns, unit testing, clean code, and code reviews
- Comfortable troubleshooting production issues with structured debugging and good communication
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with payment flows (card-present), device integrations, or fintech products
- Experience publishing artifacts (Maven/Gradle), semantic versioning, changelogs, release automation
- Experience publishing and maintaining apps on Google Play or on device-specific app stores (smartPOS)
- Familiarity with AWS-backed systems and REST APIs
Even if your experience does not exactly match every requirement,
we encourage you to apply if you believe you are the right person for the role based on your passion, grit, or track record.
