Role overview The Data Engineer Specialist will build and run the data pipelines that power Sani/Ikos Group’s AI programmes, analytics and reporting. You will own end-to-end data products, from source systems through to curated datasets, with responsibility for design, build, testing, monitoring and production support.
A key focus in the first year will be the data quality programme. Working as a hands-on engineer within the Data Quality squad, you will identify, size, correct and monitor issues in guest, reservation and revenue data, helping ensure the business can trust the data it uses every day.
This is a practical, collaborative role. You will work closely with AI Engineers, Data Scientists, Data Engineers and business data owners to make sure the right data is available, reliable and fit for purpose.
Main responsibilities
- Find, fix and monitor data quality issues, including logging volume, examples, root cause and fixability, tracing issues back to the point of capture, building corrections, testing on samples, reporting side effects and applying approved fixes to history.
- Build and maintain batch and real-time ingestion pipelines from enterprise sources such as PMS, CRS, CRM, booking engines, revenue management systems, web and app platforms, and HR systems.
- Deliver the Foundations build by implementing reliable, secure and production-ready data architecture components agreed with your manager.
- Support AI workloads by working with AI Engineers and Data Scientists on data quality, access and performance for models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agent use cases, with clear data contracts in place before build.
- Build quality into pipelines through validation rules, referential integrity checks, matching and merge safeguards, observability and monitoring so issues are caught by the platform early.
- Operate Azure services effectively, including Azure Data Factory, Functions, Storage, Containers, Synapse and related databases,
with attention to cost, performance and scalability.
- Support production by troubleshooting and resolving pipeline incidents to root cause.
- Document data flows, technical designs and runbooks so others can understand, operate and extend the solutions.
- Work with Git, CI/CD, code review, security practices and one definition per business concept.
What success looks like in the first 12 months
- Issues from the data quality catalogue are sized with volume, examples and root cause, and approved corrections are applied to history with no unreported side effects.
- Pipelines and platform components are delivered to production, in use, documented, monitored and supported by agreed data contracts.
- At least one AI use case is live on data you have engineered, with quality and freshness agreed with the AI team.
- Your squad, AI Engineers and Data Scientists recognise you as the person who knows where the data is and how good it is.
Required qualifications and experience
- 4–5 years’ experience in Data Engineering or cloud data platform environments, with production pipelines of your own.
- Strong SQL and Python skills for transformation, automation and pipeline development.
- Hands-on experience with Azure services, including Data Factory, Functions, Storage, Containers and Synapse Analytics; Databricks or Microsoft Fabric is a plus.
- Experience designing ETL/ELT for batch and streaming workloads.
- Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, data lake and lakehouse architectures, and cloud data warehouses.
- Practical data quality experience,
including profiling, record matching, deduplication, validation rules and corrections applied to production data.
- Experience with Git, Docker, orchestration tools such as Airflow, and CI/CD or DevOps practices.
- Understanding of security best practices, API integrations and event-driven architectures.
- Exposure to data for AI workloads, such as feature datasets, vector stores and document pipelines for RAG, is an advantage.
- Experience with hospitality data, such as Opera PMS, CRS or CRM, is a plus.
- Professional English at minimum B2 level; Spanish is an advantage.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field.
Desired skills and competencies
- Ownership mindset: what you build runs, is monitored and is documented.
- Quality-first approach: you test and validate before anything reaches a consumer.
- Business awareness: you ask what the data is used for before deciding how to model it.
- Curiosity about AI and how data supports intelligent products and automation.
- Clear communication, with the ability to explain data issues in plain language to non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborative working style and comfort partnering with technical and business teams.
