About Smartt Messenger

Smartt Messenger is an E2EE messaging app designed to make on-line communication non-addictive. It's built on Signal's open-source stack. We're a small team preparing for launch in Q1 2027, and we're hiring the engineer who will own the infrastructure behind it.

The role

Signal runs on a distributed set of interdependent servers across several clouds. Your job is to deliver that full infrastructure for Smartt, working from Signal's own repositories, deployment tooling and our existing documentation. You'll adapt it to our scale and budget along the way.

By launch, the platform must be:

- Deployed automatically through CI/CD
- Split into separate staging and production environments
- Autoscaling and secured
- Monitored against defined SLOs
- Fully defined as code
- Designed so a second region can be added after launch without rework

You'll plan the path to get there with us, then own the platform's reliability from launch onwards. Must-have

- 5+ years in DevOps, SRE or Platform Engineering, with real ownership of production systems
- Strong hands-on AWS, especially ECS/Fargate, DynamoDB, ElastiCache and IAM
- Working experience with GCP (Cloud Run) and Azure
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, OpenTofu, Pulumi or similar
- Containers, and CI/CD with GitHub Actions using OIDC and no long-lived credentials




- Autoscaling and high-availability design
- Operating JVM services: Java, Maven, Jib, Dropwizard/Micronaut
- Managed data and streaming services, such as DynamoDB, Redis, BigQuery, Cosmos DB and Kinesis
- Observability and SRE practice: SLOs, metrics, logging, alerting and incident handling
- Security engineering: least-privilege IAM, secrets management and workload identity
- Our contact discovery service (CDSI) and Secure Value Recovery (SVR2) run in SGX enclaves on Azure Confidential Computing machines. Prior experience running SGX-based services in production with high availability is required.
- Effective use of AI coding agents such as Claude Code or Codex. That means instructing them precisely, reviewing their output critically, and staying accountable for everything that reaches production.
- Clear technical documentation and runbooks
