The Comedy Clubhouse
Barcelona
The Comedy Clubhouse started in 2021 as Barcelona's first dedicated comedy club. At the tail end of covid we (a bunch of comedians) started doing 1pm & 3pm shows in a tiny Irish pub. We since moved to another location and became known as the best spot in Barcelona for stand-up comedy.
Over the last year we have been launching a new, bigger venue around the corner from the original. Between the two, we now run a combined 9 nights a week — 7 at the new venue, plus 2 (Friday and Saturday) at the original.
We're also starting to build out a food menu and exploring a wider range of opening hours. Because of this, a great candidate will ideally also have experience starting a restaurant from scratch — including coordinating the reception of food orders and deliveries — and the capacity to manage a growing team beyond the current bar staff. We expect the combined bar and restaurant team could grow to around 10 people in total in the near future.
Starting the new spot has been a huge learning curve for us, and while we have an awesome team of dedicated people, it has come time that we need to professionalize our team to the highest degree possible.
This means someone coming in with expertise on how successful bars and restaurants run from a management perspective, with both the energy and initiative to execute necessary changes in a chaotic environment.
This isn't a desk-based management role — you'll be working hands-on, on the floor, alongside the team. Regular availability until close (often around 4am) is part of the job, not an occasional exception.
Because we've always had a “build as we go” mentality, many of our systems are outdated or executed inconsistently,
so this person needs a clear understanding of how to build systems and follow up with personnel in a way that ensures new systems get executed cleanly and old systems aren't allowed to deteriorate.
This person is responsible for the entire team at The Clubhouse, so our idóneo candidate has extensive experience managing large teams in the hospitality industry.
We have listed a competitive salary that we hope will attract some very strong candidates who understand the stakes. Regardless, we believe the right candidate would be extremely valuable to us — so we're very open to discussing different compensation options, especially if we can find a results-based system that works for both of us.
Our ideal candidate would have:
- Strong English and workable Spanish as a minimum
- 6+ years of experience in hospitality
- Bar management experience
- Experience starting or launching a restaurant/food operation from scratch
- A strong admin streak (numbers, margins, profits, systems)
- Familiarity with accounting/invoicing systems, and the ability to quickly learn new ones (e.g. sending invoices for private bookings)
- A commanding presence (ability to eject people from shows, etc.)
- Experience leading teams of 10+ people
- Real hiring and firing experience — comfortable making those calls
- A track record of building hospitality systems from scratch,
not just operating ones someone else already built
Responsibilities include:
- Ownership of building the full team at The Clubhouse — hiring, onboarding, motivation, and discipline, across both venues
- Full ownership of P&L; across both venues: COGS, comps, stock levels, labor costs, and overall profit margins
- Consistent development and execution of promotions end to end (& measurement of results)
- Ownership of cash floats and payments
- Coordinating orders and deliveries with suppliers — both bar and food — and organizing fulfillment
- Ensuring compliance with Spanish labor law and handling employment disputes directly
- Maintaining safety standards and running a confidential process for any safety complaints
- Ownership of neighbour relations — if there's noise on the street and people complain, you're the one speaking with them, meeting with them, and making changes
- Development of novel systems and enforcement of existing ones
- Looking out for VIP customers and performers, ensuring their comfort
- Regular meetings with the owner — entirely directed by you, results-based reports
- Acting as the owner's partner in running and evolving the business, with minimal oversight needed once onboarded
