TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF CARTAGENA , A CALL FOR APPLICATIONS IS ANNOUNCED FOR THE HIRING OF RESEARCH STAFF WITH A DOCTORATE IN SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES IN THE RESEARCH AREA OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTATIONAL SIMULATION USING FINITE ELEMENTS FOR UNDERWATER ACOUSTICS (CALL CODE: C-039/26) .

TITLE OF THE POSITION OFFERED: Researcher in Computational Mechanics and High-Performance Scientific Computing

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Indefinite.

PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY: Researcher, Ph.D.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION : Hold an official doctoral degree in a field related to computational mechanics, continuum mechanics, or computational acoustics.

In the case of degrees obtained abroad (including EU degrees), applicants must provide proof that they hold the corresponding recognition or credential attesting to the equivalence of their degree, if applicable.

GROSS ANNUAL REMUNERATION: The employee will receive an annual gross salary of 39.493,58 euros.

PROJECT TITLE: HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTATIONAL FINITE ELEMENT SIMULATION FOR UNDERWATER ACOUSTICS.

DURATION: The term of this contract will be contingent upon the availability of budgetary funds for the aforementioned line of research.

Project: “Disruptive Materials for Submarine Invisibility (PRIORITY),” reference number EU/EDF/ , funded by the EUROPEAN COMMISSION. Budget line .Y025 541A 642.10 (code: 2026/00163/001).

INTENDED DATE OF DEPUTY EMPLOYMENT : immediate.

TASKS TO BE CARRIED OUT:

The successful candidate will participate in the development, implementation,



and optimization of high-performance numerical simulation tools in the field of computational mechanics. Specifically, the candidate will perform the following tasks:

- Development and implementation of numerical methods based on the finite element method for simulating problems in computational mechanics and multiphysics.
- Development and maintenance of scientific code for solving large-scale computational problems.
- Parallelization of finite element codes using MPI (Message Passing Interface) for efficient execution on distributed-memory architectures and HPC systems.
- Implementation and optimization of parallel algorithms associated with the assembly and solution of large-scale algebraic systems.
- Integration and use of libraries and tools for scientific computing and parallel linear algebra.
- Analysis of computational performance, scalability, and efficiency of the developments through strong and weak scaling studies.
- Execution, verification, and validation of numerical simulations on clusters and other high-performance computing infrastructures.
- Documenting the developments carried out and participating in the technical and scientific activities associated with the research project.

MERITS TO BE ASSESSED AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Academic Background (15%): The candidate’s academic record and the relevance
of their university degrees to the position’s requirements will be evaluated. Particular emphasis will be placed on degrees related to engineering, mathematics, physics,
informatics, and computer science, as well as master’s and doctoral programs
related to computational mechanics, numerical methods, scientific
computing, or related fields.

Specific Training (20%): Accredited specific training in computational mechanics, the finite element method, numerical methods for partial differential equations, scientific computing, high-performance computing (HPC), parallel and distributed computing, MPI, and techniques for optimization and scalability of scientific codes will be evaluated.



Training in scientific programming using languages such as C/C++, Fortran, Julia, Python, or other languages relevant to high-performance computing will also be considered.

Professional Experience (35%): Professional and/or research experience directly related to the position’s duties will be evaluated, particularly in the development and implementation of numerical methods and finite element codes, computational mechanics, scientific programming, and high-performance computing. Demonstrable experience in parallelizing scientific codes using MPI, implementing algorithms for distributed-memory architectures, solving large-scale algebraic systems, using
parallel scientific libraries, and running simulations on clusters and HPC systems. Experience in performance analysis, scalability, and optimization of scientific codes will also be taken into consideration. Proven experience with scientific and parallel computing tools and libraries, Linux systems, job schedulers in HPC environments, version control, and methodologies for collaborative scientific software development will also be valued.

Languages (5%): Knowledge of English will be evaluated, particularly the ability to
communicate orally and in writing in international scientific and technical settings. The ability to understand and prepare technical and scientific documentation in English will be particularly valued.

Other merits (10%): Scientific publications, participation in R&D;&I; projects, contributions to scientific software, code repositories, and open-source software projects, as well as participation in conferences and scientific activities related to the scope of the contract, will be taken into account.
Personal interview (15%): The interview will focus on assessing the
candidate’s suitability for the specific duties of the position. The candidate’s knowledge and experience in computational mechanics, the finite element method,
scientific programming, high-performance computing, and parallelization using
MPI. Additionally, the candidate may be asked to describe previous work or projects
and to explain possible strategies for the parallelization and
efficient execution of a large-scale finite element code. xghoner Problem-solving skills,
independence, the ability to learn, and technical communication skills will also be evaluated.
