Offer Description
Energy system models recognise geologic carbon storage as an indispensable component in the efforts to
decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors. A promising approach involves injecting CO2 into reactive (ultra)mafic
rocks, where chemical reactions convert CO2 into stable minerals over relatively short periods, enabling
secure CO2 storage deep underground. Nevertheless, challenges associated with large-scale deployment
need to be better understood, including maintaining reservoir injectivity and managing induced seismicity.
We offer a funded three-year PhD position aimed at advancing the understanding of coupled chemo-hydromechanical
processes controlling fluid flow and permeability evolution in fractured, chemically reactive
(ultra)mafic rocks. The research will focus on developing computational models to investigate the complex
feedbacks between fluid flow, geochemical reactions and rock deformation during CO2 mineralisation, with
implications for reservoir injectivity, induced seismicity and the safe and sustainable deployment of this
carbon storage technology. This PhD research will be supervised by Dr Iman Rahimzadeh Kivi. The
successful candidate will conduct research in a collaborative and enthusiastic environment at the
Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a María de Maeztu Centre of Excellence and joint
research institute run by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Spanish National Research
Council (CSIC).

Skills/Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated, perseverant and creative candidate with solid analytical and problemsolving
skills looking to leave their mark on science. The successful candidate should hold an
undergraduate and master's degree in engineering, physics, geoscience or a related discipline. Candidates
must be pre-admitted or admitted to the PhD in Physics programme at the University of the Balearic
Islands.
Specific Requirements
Skills in machine-learning approaches and/or phase-field modelling would be a plus, since they will be part
of the computational framework. Experience in modelling, processing or interpreting experimental or field
data will also be highly regarded. Moreover, particular consideration will be given to scientific publications
in international journals and conference participation.
Candidates need to provide their CV and a cover letter describing their motivation for applying and
highlighting their relevant qualifications and experience, and the contact details of two referees.
