Our research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for three consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022 and 2 ICN2 comprises 20 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Description of Group/Project

The Physics and Engineering of Nanodevices Group, led by ICREA Prof. Sergio O. Valenzuela, focuses on developing novel devices designed to investigate the physical properties of materials at the nanoscale. The Group’s research combines state-of-the-art lithographic and materials-processing techniques with advanced electrical, magnetic, and spectroscopic characterization. Current activities centre on quantum devices based on metals, graphene, topological insulators, and other two-dimensional and quantum materials. A major research direction is spintronics, which exploits the electron spin degree of freedom both to investigate fundamental phenomena and to develop new device concepts, with potential applications in fast, energy-efficient, non-volatile, and highly integrated electronics.
