Finance Manager, Spain SailGP Team

- Reports to: Head of Operations, with a direct reporting line to the Team CEO and Team Directors
- Location: Valencia, Spain (office-based, with scope for partial remote working)
- Term: Part-time employee, [0.6 FTE / three days per week], with flexibility around month-end and event peaks. Full-time consideration for an exceptional candidate.

Role Overview We are looking for a hands-on Finance Manager to own the day-to-day finance function of the Spain SailGP Team. This is a single-person finance role in a lean, fast-moving organisation: you will do the bookkeeping and the reporting, and you will also be the person the CEO and Head of Operations turn to for a clear view of where the team stands against budget and how much cash it has.

The role sits at the centre of the team’s commercial and operational activity. You will process and control the team’s spend across sporting, logistics, marketing and event workstreams, maintain the finance platforms and records, prepare monthly management reporting, and act as the team’s day-to-day point of contact with our external accountants, auditors and the SailGP central finance function.

This is a build-and-run role rather than a maintain-only one. Some processes are established and some are not yet, so we are looking for someone comfortable improving how things work while keeping the basics accurate and on time.

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping and financial records

- Maintain complete and accurate books for the team, including posting and coding all transactions to the agreed chart of accounts and cost centres.
- Own and maintain the team’s finance platforms and supporting tools, keeping master data (suppliers, customers, cost centres, approval limits) accurate and up to date.
- Maintain an orderly, audit-ready digital filing system for invoices, contracts, receipts, expense claims and supporting documentation.
- Ensure the team’s financial records comply with Spanish accounting and tax requirements, working with the team’s external accountants on treatment where needed.

Accounts payable, receivable and approval workflows

- Process supplier invoices end to end: verification against purchase orders or contracts, coding, routing for approval, and scheduling for payment.
- Operate and maintain the invoice approval workflow, ensuring every commitment is approved at the correct level before payment is released and escalating exceptions rather than absorbing them.
- Raise and issue sponsorship, partnership and other customer invoices in line with contractual milestones, and monitor and chase receivables through to collection.
- Prepare payment runs for review and release by an authorised signatory, and maintain the supplier payment calendar.
- Act as the finance point of contact for suppliers and partner finance teams on billing and payment queries.

Reconciliations and month-end

- Perform bank, credit card, cash and account reconciliations on a regular cycle and resolve differences promptly.
- Run the month-end close to an agreed timetable, including accruals, prepayments, intercompany and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Maintain the fixed asset register, including additions,

disposals and depreciation, and reconcile SailGP capital asset lease fee charges to the team’s records.
- Prepare and post journals with clear supporting documentation and a visible audit trail.

Reporting and financial statements

- Prepare monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow, with commentary on presente to budget variances and their drivers.
- Produce reporting packs for the CEO, Head of Operations and shareholders or board as required, in a format they can act on.
- Support the preparation of annual statutory financial statements in coordination with the team’s external accountants and auditors.
- Provide ad-hoc financial analysis to support commercial, sporting and operational decisions, including sponsorship deal economics and event or project costings.

Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow

- Coordinate the annual budget process across departments, consolidate departmental inputs and maintain the approved budget as the control baseline.
- Maintain a rolling forecast reflecting the season calendar, sponsorship income and committed costs, and reforecast as circumstances change.
- Maintain short and medium-term cash flow visibility, flagging pressure points early and clearly to the Head of Operations and CEO.
- Track spend against budget at department and project level, and challenge spend that is not approved, not budgeted or not supported.

Expense control and event spend

- Administer the team’s expense and corporate card processes, reviewing claims for policy compliance and completeness of evidence.
- Control event-related spend across all team areas, including travel, accommodation and logistics, in coordination with the Head of Operations and the administration and office management function.
- Maintain and improve the team’s finance policies and procedures, including expense policy, approval thresholds and procurement documentation.
- Support procurement by preparing supplier cost comparisons and holding suppliers to agreed commercial terms.

External and league stakeholders

- Act as the day-to-day contact for the team’s external accountants and tax advisers on bookkeeping, payroll inputs, VAT and other filings, reviewing their output rather than relying on it unchecked.
- Manage the annual audit or review process, preparing schedules and responding to auditor requests.
- Prepare and submit the financial and insurance information required by SailGP under the Participation Agreement, including annual financial information and cost cap reporting.
- Reconcile and query SailGP Shared Services charges and monthly financial reports received from the SailGP central finance team.
- Support the administration of the team’s insurance policies, including renewals and evidence of compliance.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

- Part-qualified or qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA, or Spanish equivalent), or qualified by demonstrable experience.
- Minimum three years in a hands-on finance role covering both transactional processing and management reporting.
- Proven experience owning a full month-end close and preparing management accounts with variance commentary.
- Demonstrable experience of budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management.
- Practical knowledge of Spanish accounting, VAT and tax compliance requirements, including working with external accountants or a gestoría.
- Strong Excel skills, including working with structured data and building or maintaining models and reporting templates.
- Experience with an accounting or ERP system, and confidence learning new finance platforms quickly.
- Fluent Spanish and English, written and spoken.

Desirable

- Experience in sport, events, entertainment or another project and calendar-driven business.
- Multi-currency and multi-jurisdiction experience, including cross-border supplier payments and freight or travel cost recharges.
- Experience in a small or start-up organisation where the finance function was being built rather than inherited.
- Exposure to sponsorship or commercial revenue recognition and contract-linked invoicing.
- Experience with NetSuite or a comparable mid-market ERP.
- Experience supporting an external audit as the principal internal contact.
- Familiarity with cost cap, league or governing body financial reporting requirements.

Skills and Competencies

- Accurate and detail-driven, with a low tolerance for unexplained differences.
- Able to work independently, prioritise without close supervision and meet deadlines in a small team.
- Clear communicator who can explain financial information to non-financial colleagues, including athletes, technical staff and commercial partners.
- Comfortable holding the line on process and approvals in a fast-moving environment, with the judgement to know when to escalate.
- Analytical and practical, with a bias towards simplifying and improving processes.
- Discreet and trustworthy in handling confidential commercial, contractual and payroll information.
- Genuine interest in the team’s performance and in sport as a business.

Reporting Lines and Key Stakeholders

- Reports to: Head of Operations, with a direct reporting line to the Team CEO on budget, cash flow and reporting matters.
- Internal stakeholders: Team CEO, Head of Operations, commercial and marketing, sporting and technical leads, logistics, and the administration and office management function.
- External stakeholders: external accountants and tax advisers, auditors, banking providers, insurance brokers, suppliers, sponsors and partner finance teams.
- No direct reports at present.

What We Offer

- Opportunity to join the Spain SailGP Team.
- A dynamic, international, high-performance environment.
- Ownership of the finance function from day one, with direct exposure to the CEO and the commercial side of the team.
- Exposure to world-class sporting events.
- Career growth within the sports and events industry.
