? PhD POSITION – FPI / AEI | University of Granada

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the recently funded project:

CARBONATE – Carbonate Biosignatures and Origins in Natural Terrestrial Environments at the University of Granada (UGR), Spain.

The PhD contract is directly associated with CARBONATE, funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI).

? Research area

Geomicrobiology, Geochemistry and Mineral Formation in Extreme Environments The PhD will investigate low-temperature mineral formation and biosignature preservation in terrestrial extreme environments, particularly carbonate–evaporite systems.

Research may include

- Geomicrobiology and microbe–mineral interactions
- Low-temperature geochemistry and mineralogy
- Carbonate, evaporite, gypsum-rich and hypersaline systems
- Stable isotopes and analytical geochemistry
- Experimental mineral formation
- Petrography, microscopy and spectroscopy
- Numerical modelling and simulation of mineral and geochemical processes
- Extreme environments, early Earth and astrobiology The aim is to understand how biological, geochemical and environmental processes control mineral formation and how these signals are preserved in the geological record, with implications for early Earth and planetary environments.

? Candidate profile

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification giving access to doctoral studies in:

Geology / Earth Sciences, Geochemistry, Geobiology,



Sedimentology, Mineralogy, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Computational Geosciences, or related fields.

We particularly value

- Strong motivation for interdisciplinary research
- Good written and spoken English
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Experience in fieldwork and/or laboratory research
- Experience with petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical or microbiological techniques
- Interest in field, experimental, analytical and numerical approaches
- Willingness to undertake field campaigns and international research stays

Experience with stable isotopes, microscopy, spectroscopy, microbiology, experimental geochemistry, numerical modelling or computational methods is an advantage. A driving licence is useful for field-based research.

? The PhD will be carried out in an international, interdisciplinary environment with opportunities for collaborations and research stays abroad.
