Overview of the Role

As a Senior UX Designer for Student Experience, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the learner-facing interface of PL+, a mobile companion to Pearson courseware. This is a full-time, contingent position covering maternity leave for approximately nine months. You will join the Student Experience squad (STEX), responsible for designing features that make learning motivating, personalized, and aligned with classroom instruction for students aged 16+.

Your contributions will directly impact user engagement, activation rates, and retention, supporting key business objectives in a high-growth, international environment.

Detailed Responsibilities

- Lead end-to-end UX design for key student-facing features, including profile management, progress evidence, avatars and personalization, leaderboards, friend connections, points, badges, and settings.
- Develop UI solutions that motivate students while ensuring inclusivity and minimizing anxiety for lower-performing learners.
- Ensure seamless integration of learning progress with curriculum content, reinforcing educational outcomes.
- Enhance social motivation through responsible gamification, utilizing leaderboards, points, and badges.
- Design inclusive experiences for both guest and authenticated users,



ensuring accurate handling of progress in all user states.
- Create and iterate on detailed designs and interactive prototypes in Figma for usability testing and development handoff.
- Support product experiments aimed at achieving activation and retention targets (25% activation, 40% D30 retention for 2026).
- Collaborate with cross-functional squads, including Lesson Experience, Teacher Experience, and Foundations, to deliver cohesive user journeys.
- Work closely with product managers, mobile engineers (iOS/Android), learning designers, and analytics/CRM specialists using Braze.
- Leverage user research, quantitative data, and insights to inform and refine design decisions.
- Design for localization across seven UI languages, ensuring consistency and accessibility for international markets.
- Contribute to agile ceremonies and support iterative delivery within a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Skill Requirements

- Minimum 5 years of experience designing digital products, with a strong portfolio demonstrating systems thinking and impactful UX solutions.
- Extensive mobile UX expertise for iOS and Android platforms.
- Expert-level proficiency in Figma, including creating detailed designs and prototypes.
- Proficient use of AI tools (such as Cursor) integrated into your design workflow.
- Demonstrated experience working within established design systems.
- Ability to simplify complex, multi-team user journeys.




- Strong analytical skills with experience collaborating with data analysts and interpreting quantitative insights.
- Hands-on experience with user research and usability testing methodologies.
- Excellent communication skills in English (C1 level or above).
- Demonstrated ability to quickly assume ownership of in-flight projects and work autonomously with minimal onboarding.

Other Requirements (Optional)

- Experience designing for teenage users or within institutional education settings.
- Understanding of motivation theory, learner progress, and responsible gamification principles.
- Familiarity with localization processes and shipping products in multiple UI languages.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and designing for users with diverse needs.
- Awareness of regulatory requirements such as GDPR, FERPA, or similar, especially as they pertain to products for young people.
- Experience supporting and interpreting quantitative experiments and A/B testing.
- Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Braze.
