Offer Description

We welcome expressions of interest for a fully-funded PhD project examining Pre-Pottery Neolithic food practices in the Levant. The PhD candidate will study carbonised remains of prepared plant foods from some of the best-preserved early Neolithic sites in Syria, Jordan and other regions, integrating archaeobotanical analysis with experimental archaeology and reference collections of plant-food materials.

This PhD forms part of the STAPLES From bread to porridge: development of cereal- based cooking practices during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic in the Levant (Proyecto de Generación de Conocimiento, PID NB-I00), which develops and applies innovative interdisciplinary methodologies to investigate the origins of plant-based food traditions of early farming communities in the Levant (11,600–9,500 cal BP). By integrating archaeobotanical,



microstructural, biomolecular and experimental approaches, the project reconstructs ancient cooking activities and food products from archaeological food remains, for studying the emergence of staple foods such as bread, porridge and other cereal-based preparations at the dawn of agriculture.

Specific Requirements

Previous experience in archaeology—such as participation in excavation campaigns or laboratory internships—will be viewed favorably.
