? Full-time | Postdoctoral Position The Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC) is the largest Spanish research institute dedicated to Micro and Nanotechnologies, Micro-systems, Semiconductor Technologies and Integrated Systems. Recognized as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence, IMB-CNM hosts Spain’s largest clean room facilities and develops cutting-edge technologies for science and industry.
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher in Micro-fabrication and Heterogeneous Integration to lead the development of advanced micro-channel cooling technologies for next-generation radiation detectors, semiconductor devices, and high-performance computing (HPC) systems.
This role offers a unique opportunity to bridge micro-fabrication, MEMS technologies, advanced packaging, thermal management, silicon inter-posers and 3D integration within an internationally collaborative research environment.
About the Project The project focuses on developing innovative technological solutions to integrate micro-channel cooling into semiconductor platforms through:
✅ Silicon interposers with embedded micro-channels
✅ Heterogeneous integration technologies
✅ Redistribution Layers (RDL)
✅ Through-Silicon Vias (TSVs)
✅ Wafer bonding and advanced packaging processes
✅ Monolithic integration with radiation detectors The resulting technologies will support applications in:
- Particle Physics Instrumentation
- Photon Science and Free Electron Lasers
- High-Performance Computing (HPC) Cooling
- Future Semiconductor and Heterogeneous Integration Systems
Your Role
As the Technical Lead for prototype development, you will coordinate the design, fabrication, integration and validation of advanced micro-fabricated devices.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead the development and integration of micro-fabricated prototypes.
- Define, optimize and supervise process flows for micro-channel cooling devices.
- Ensure compatibility across multiple fabrication and integration technologies.
- Drive technical decision-making throughout the project life cycle.
Prototype Development & Coordination
- Manage multiple prototype developments in parallel.
- Plan fabrication campaigns and process iterations.
- Identify, assess and mitigate technical risks.
- Coordinate activities with clean room engineers and technical staff.
International Collaboration
- Act as the technical interface with international research partners.
- Translate system-level requirements into fabrication and design specifications.
- Support experimental validation campaigns and data interpretation.
Knowledge & Research Output
- Document process flows, design decisions and experimental results.
- Contribute to project deliverables, technical reports and scientific publications.
- Participate in international conferences and collaborative research activities.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Experimental Physics, Microelectronics, Electronic Engineering, Materials Science, MEMS Engineering,
Semiconductor Technology or related disciplines
- Leading skills to take technical decisions and responsibilities
- Capacity to collaborate efficiently and openly in a technical and research environment
- Proven experience in clean room-based micro-fabrication
- Experience in MEMS or in advanced packaging / heterogeneous integration
- Previous experience in applied microfluidics or thermal management will be highly valued.
- Skills: Teamwork, Critical thinking and problem solving, Collaborative knowledge generation, Managing deadlines and competing responsibilities, Flexibility in scientific approaches and collaboration
- Languages: Professional working proficiency in English, Basic knowledge of Spanish is desirable
