Are you an experienced Family Medicine / General Practitioner trained outside Ireland and interested in progressing to EU/UK recognized Specialist GP Registration?
Ireland offers a structured 2-year pathway for experienced international GPs / Family Medicine doctors to transition into Irish general practice while preparing for the MICGP examinations and entry to the Specialist Register.
You will work in a participating rural GP practice, supported by clinical mentorship, structured self-directed education, and protected learning provided by the Irish College of GPs.
What the programme offers

- A clear route toward Specialist Medical Council Registration in the Division of General Practice in Ireland
Essential criteria
- Minimum 36 months of recent and relevant experience in Family Medicine / General Practice in a primary care setting
- Additional hospital experience including General Medicine and Paediatrics (minimum 3 months each)
- Eligibility for registration with the Irish Medical Council (General Division)
- Evidence of English language proficiency where required
This programme is designed for experienced GPs who are capable of practising independently in a community-based primary care setting and who are seeking a supported pathway to long-term practice in Ireland.
Important:
This is not a training programme, but a conversion pathway that recognises and values your existing Family Medicine experience. xiflcak
Experience that is not counted as Family Medicine includes:
- Locum work
- Out-of-hours GP service work
- Emergency medicine
- Walk-in clinic work without continuity of care
