About the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Software Engineer with a strong background in edge device software, automation, and hardware-software integration. You will work at the intersection of mechanical systems, computer vision, and software, developing the control and automation layer for our medical devices.
Our devices are connected, edge IoT instruments: they run a stack of containerized Python services on Linux, are deployed and managed remotely across a fleet, and coordinate motion control, cameras, computer vision, and a web-based touch UI to carry out delicate lab procedures. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will write code that moves real hardware—stepper motors, precision linear stages, cameras, and microfluidic systems—while also building the software infrastructure around it.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain automation software for the precision instruments used in IVF procedures
- Integrate and control motorized stages, stepper motors, and encoders through serial and digital interfaces
- Build and optimize computer vision pipelines for real-time image analysis (object detection, segmentation, tracking)
- Design and implement containerized microservices using Python, Docker, and MQTT for device orchestration
- Build and maintain remote deployment, monitoring, and update workflows for a fleet of edge devices
- Work closely with hardware and electronics engineers to define and refine HW-SW interfaces
- Contribute to system calibration routines, motion planning, and closed-loop control logic
- Deploy and maintain software on Linux-based edge and server platforms
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical decision-making
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and recommend adoption where relevant
QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 7+ years of professional experience in software development, with significant focus on edge/device software, automation, or embedded systems
- Strong proficiency in Python for application development and system integration
- Experience with motor control concepts: stepper motors, encoders, servo loops, homing routines, and backlash compensation
- Familiarity with communication interfaces and protocols: serial (RS-232/RS-485), SPI, I2C, USB, or similar
- Working knowledge of Linux systems (command line, systemd, networking, deployment)
- Experience with Docker and containerized application deployment
- Understanding of computer vision fundamentals (OpenCV, image processing pipelines)
- Familiarity with Git and version control workflows
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills—comfortable with an oscilloscope as well as a debugger
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams
Preferred
- Master's degree in a relevant engineering or computer science field
- Experience building and operating remotely-managed edge/IoT device fleets
- Experience with ML-based vision models (YOLO, Roboflow, or similar frameworks)
- Knowledge of MQTT or similar messaging protocols for IoT/microservices
- Experience with web UI development (React/TypeScript or similar) for device control
- Experience with C/C++ for embedded or low-level development
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS) and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience in regulated environments (medical devices, ISO 13485) is a plus
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and workflows
