Purpose of the job As a senior Data Engineer Design, build, operate, and continuously improve
secure, reliable, and scalable data pipelines and data stores
that enable high‑quality analytics, reporting, and data‑driven decision‑making for the Spain market, while aligning with PMI’s global data platform, governance standards, and compliance requirements.
The role ensures that
data is trusted, available, performant, and fit‑for‑purpose , supporting business analysts, data scientists, BI Developers and digital products across Commercial, Finance, Supply Chain, Consumer, and Corporate domains.

The Data Engineer bridges
global platforms
and
local business needs , turning data into a durable asset that enables PMI’s smoke‑free future.
Key responsibilities Accountability 1 Design, build, and operationalize data pipelines and data stores Outcome: Reliable, scalable, and reusable data assets supporting Spain market use cases.
Accountability 2 Apply PMI and DI&A; data engineering standards, patterns, and tools (e.g., Snowflake, Matillion, dbt, AWS services, BigQuery) to ensure consistency, reusability, and maintainability of data solutions. Outcome: Standardized, production‑grade data pipelines aligned with global architecture.
Accountability 3 Perform data quality validation, monitoring, and remediation, embedding data quality checks in pipelines and proactively addressing data issues. Outcome: Trusted data with defined quality thresholds supporting business and analytical confidence.
Accountability 4 Ensure compliant, secure, and appropriate data storage and processing, in line with PMI policies, data governance rules, and relevant legislation (e.g., GDPR). Outcome: Data solutions that are auditable, compliant, and secure by design.
Accountability 5 Embed security, scalability, efficiency, reliability, portability, and cost‑awareness into all data engineering solutions. Outcome: Future‑proof data platforms that scale with business demand and usage.
Accountability 6 Collaborate with Business Analysts, Product Owners, Data Architects, and stakeholders to translate analytical and reporting requirements into robust data solutions. Outcome: Well‑designed data models and datasets aligned with business priorities.
Accountability 7 Work closely with Data Scientists and Advanced Analytics teams to ensure pipelines support model development, training, deployment, and monitoring. Outcome: Analytical workloads enabled by fit‑for‑purpose, performant data pipelines.
Accountability 8 Monitor, optimize, and continuously improve data pipeline and platform performance, addressing reliability, cost, and scalability. Outcome: Stable, performant, and efficient data operations with minimal manual intervention.
Required skills and Competencies Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
Work Experience Minimum
6+ years of experience
in Data Engineering or a closely related role. Hands‑on experience delivering
production‑grade data pipelines
in cloud environments. Experience working in
Agile / product‑oriented delivery models . Exposure to business domains such as
Commercial, Finance, Supply Chain, Consumer, Product, or Life Sciences .
Familiarity with enterprise systems such as
Salesforce, Digital Consumer Engagement platforms, ERP, and Finance systems .
Technical & Functional Skills Core Data Engineering Technologies Snowflake
– data warehousing, performance optimization, cost‑aware design dbt
– data transformation, testing, and modeling AWS
– S3, Glue, Lambda, Redshift, EMR (or equivalent services) Strong SQL skills; Strong knowledge of Python (or similar) Experience with relational and NoSQL data stores Understanding of data modeling (dimensional, analytical, and consumption‑focused) Data quality checks, lineage, and observability Knowledge of data security, privacy, and governance principles
Ways of Working Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills Ability to explain complex data topics to non‑technical audiences End‑to‑end ownership of data pipelines and datasets Applies standards independently and contributes to solution design Proactively identifies quality, performance, and reliability issues Acts as a strong partner to analysts and data scientists Leads complex data engineering initiatives and designs
