We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to join our research group at the Instituto de Óptica (CSIC), Madrid, to work on:
Advanced Pulse Modulation Formats for Distributed Optical Fibre Sensing The PhD will focus on developing next-generation Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) systems, combining advanced optical modulation, high-bandwidth optoelectronics, signal processing, simulations, and experimental work.
The research will be closely connected to the FERMAT project, including exciting real-world applications such as seismic monitoring and tsunami early warning using submarine telecommunication cables.
We are looking for candidates with:
- A background in Physics, Telecommunications, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields
- An MSc in Photonics or a related field
- Interest in optical communications, fibre-optic sensing,
signal processing and experimental photonics
- Programming skills (Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar)
Location: Instituto de Óptica (CSIC), Madrid, Spain
Duration: 4-year PhD contract
Gross annual salary: €25,456
Expected start: before 15 December 2026
