Job Description

Job Purpose

The EAL Tutor is responsible for supporting students who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) in developing their English language proficiency so they can fully access the curriculum and participate confidently in school life. The post holder delivers targeted English language tuition to individuals and small groups, monitors student progress and works collaboratively with teachers and school leaders to support language acquisition across the school.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

- Plan and deliver EAL lessons and interventions for individual students and small groups.
- Develop students' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English.
- Support students in acquiring the academic language required to access the curriculum.
- Assess students' English language proficiency and identify areas for development.
- Establish clear learning objectives and monitor progress against agreed targets.
- Adapt resources and teaching approaches to meet the needs of learners at different stages of English language acquisition.
- Promote student confidence, independence and active participation in learning.

Student Support

- Support new students with English as an Additional Language in settling into school.
- Provide targeted support for students requiring additional language development.
- Identify barriers to learning and implement appropriate language support strategies.
- Encourage students to apply newly acquired language skills across different curriculum areas.




- Monitor student wellbeing and engagement, reporting concerns where appropriate.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

- Assess and track students' English language development.
- Maintain accurate records of interventions, assessments and progress.
- Contribute information for student reports and parent meetings as required.
- Support the development and review of individual language learning targets.

Collaboration

- Work closely with class teachers to ensure EAL students can access classroom learning.
- Share strategies and resources that support language acquisition within the classroom.
- Liaise with parents regarding student progress when requested.
- Attend relevant meetings relating to student support and progress.

Wider School Responsibilities

- Uphold and promote the school's values and expectations.
- Support the school's safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Participate in relevant professional development opportunities.
- Contribute positively to the wider life of the school.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by the Head of Primary, Head of Secondary or line manager.

Essential Person Specification

- CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent English language teaching qualification.
- Excellent spoken and written English.
- Experience teaching English language learners.
- Understanding of second language acquisition and effective EAL strategies.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
