Contract: Full-time from October, likely until June 2027
Day rate: €500-550/day
Location: Barcelona (hybrid)
The Opportunity
We’re recruiting a Lead UX Designer for a large global technology organisation to define the future experience for one of its most complex product and service areas.
The focus is implementation: the end-to-end experience of getting sophisticated global payroll products configured, set up and ready for customers to use. Today, that journey spans multiple products, tools, teams and manual processes. The ambition is to step beyond those current constraints and establish a compelling future-state experience vision for how implementation should ultimately work.
This is not about incrementally improving individual screens.
It’s an opportunity to take a very large, complex domain, understand how all the pieces fit together and define an end-to-end experience that multiple teams can work towards over the coming year and beyond.
The Role
You’ll lead the UX and experience vision for implementation across a integral payroll ecosystem. Working alongside an experienced research and service design partner, you’ll build on research already completed and translate it into a clear vision for the future experience.
You’ll need to operate at multiple levels, mapping and designing the overarching end-to-end journey, while knowing when to go deeper into specific interactions or concepts to make that vision tangible.
You will not be expected to design every part of the eventual solution. Your role is to define where the experience needs to go and create enough clarity and conviction for teams to work towards it.
The stakeholder landscape is significant. You’ll work across product, technology and operational business teams, including people responsible for many of the manual implementation processes that exist today.
As a result,
this role needs someone who can do more than produce excellent UX work. You’ll need to communicate a compelling vision, navigate complexity and bring a broad group of senior stakeholders with you.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a genuinely strong Lead UX Designer who is comfortable tackling large, ambiguous and complicated problems. You should be able to demonstrate:
- Experience mapping and designing large-scale, end-to-end experiences.
- The ability to move from complex research, processes and systems to a coherent future-state experience vision.
- Strong strategic UX thinking combined with high-quality visual design craft.
- Experience working across multiple interconnected products, systems or services.
- Confidence operating in complex environments with large stakeholder groups.
- Strong presentation and storytelling skills - you’ll need to sell the vision as well as design it.
- The ability to move between high-level experience architecture and detailed design when required.
- A genuine appetite for the more challenging, complicated side of UX.
This needs someone capable of taking ownership of a problem that stretches beyond the scope of a typical product or feature.
Particularly Interesting Experience
A service design background or genuine service design crossover would be particularly valuable given the scale and end-to-end nature of the challenge. We’d also be interested in experience with:
- Global or multi-market products.
- Payroll, HR technology,
fintech or other operationally complex domains.
- Enterprise or B2B platforms involving multiple products and user groups.
- AI-enabled experiences and workflows.
- Complex onboarding, implementation or configuration journeys.
Direct payroll experience is not essential - the ability to make sense of complexity and design across large interconnected experiences is much more important.
The Environment
Global payroll may appear to customers as a single joined-up proposition, but underneath sits a significant ecosystem of applications, teams and processes.
That complexity is precisely what makes this role interesting.
Rather than being constrained by how those systems operate today, the team wants to establish a north-star experience for how implementation should work in the future, creating a vision that product and technology teams can progressively make real.
You’ll join an existing team with colleagues already working across research, service design and UX, and collaborate with teams internationally.
Contract & Rate
This is expected to be a full-time contract for approximately 9 months, currently anticipated to run through to the end of June 2027.
The expected rate is in the region of €500-550 per day, depending on experience and profile.
The priority is finding someone with the level of experience and leadership required to carry a piece of work of this scale.
Interview Process
The process will be led by senior design leadership and will include discussion of relevant portfolio/case study work. We’ll be particularly interested in seeing examples where you have taken a large, complex and fragmented experience, made sense of it and established a clear vision for what it should become. Please ensure to include a portfolio that demonstrates this.
