The Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) invites applications for a Researcher position (ICP2) within the research line "Pathology of Stranded Cetaceans."

The position is associated with the research project:

"Identification of the Main Threats to the Health and Conservation Status of Protected Marine Megafauna Species in the Canary Islands Demarcation"
Project reference: FB2025-SAFAMAR

The project is funded by the Biodiversity Foundation (Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge – MITECO) and has an execution period until 30 September 2028 .

The successful candidate will work at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety (IUSA), Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria .

The SAFAMAR project aims to analyse the impact of anthropogenic activities and identify potential anomalies associated with climate change affecting threatened marine megafauna in the Canary Islands. The research focuses on cetaceans, sea turtles and elasmobranchs , using health studies of stranded or accidentally captured specimens.

The project combines laboratory analyses, ecological and health data integration, statistical analysis and scientific dissemination to generate applied knowledge supporting more effective and sustainable conservation strategies for marine megafauna in the Canary Islands.

Main Responsibilities

The selected candidate will act as Project Manager , supporting the coordination, management and implementation of the IUSA-ULPGC's responsibilities within the SAFAMAR project, under the supervision of the project's management team.

The main responsibilities include:

- Contributing to the design and definition of the specific scope of tasks involving or led by IUSA-ULPGC.
- Coordinating and supporting the execution of scientific and technical activities led by IUSA-ULPGC.
- Coordinating contributions from members of the IUSA-ULPGC research team.
- Preparing scientific and technical deliverables and documentation.
- Supporting the economic justification and administrative management of the project.
- Coordinating relationships with research groups, collaborating organisations and public or private suppliers at local, regional, national and international level.
- Supporting the preparation of procurement and tendering documentation for goods, services and works.
- Managing and contributing to communication, science dissemination and representation activities.
- Participating in regional, national and international meetings, committees, working groups, congresses and seminars.
- Preparing the corresponding minutes, reports and other required documentation.




- Integrating and optimising SAFAMAR activities with other projects and scientific initiatives carried out at IUSA-ULPGC.
- Supporting other activities arising from the implementation and management of the project.

Additional Information

Contract type: Permanent position linked to a research line/project.

Working hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week .

Working schedule: Monday to Friday, 08:00–15:30 .

Workplace: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety (IUSA), Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Monthly gross salary: €1,886.85 .

Additional salary supplements may be considered depending on project implementation and budget availability.

Proposed starting date: 16 September 2026 .

The maximum score is 100 points , according to the following criteria.

1. Research and/or Professional Experience – Maximum 50 points

The assessment will consider:

- Professional experience in Research, Development and Innovation (R&D;&I;) activities in Animal Health : 5 points per year of employment, or proportional scoring by months worked.
- Professional experience in publicly funded competitive research projects in marine animal veterinary pathology : 3 points per year .
- Professional experience in publicly funded competitive research projects in veterinary pathology : 2 points per year .
- Professional experience in other publicly funded competitive research projects: 1 point per year .

Additional merits include:

- Indexed scientific publications in marine animal veterinary pathology: 3 points per publication .
- Indexed scientific publications in veterinary pathology: 2 points per publication .
- Indexed scientific publications in veterinary sciences: 1 point per publication .
- Indexed scientific publications in other experimental sciences: 0.5 points per publication .
- International scientific communications in marine animal veterinary pathology: 2 points per communication .
- International scientific communications in veterinary pathology: 1 point per communication .
- Other scientific communications:



0.5 points per communication , up to a maximum of 5 points.

Supporting documentation: Employment contracts and/or valid certificates, together with a CV containing properly referenced publications and communications.

2. Academic and Complementary Training – Maximum 20 points

Assessment will consider:

- PhD in Veterinary Sciences: 15 points.
- Other PhD in related Experimental Sciences: 10 points.
- Postgraduate Master's degree in Veterinary Sciences: 5 points per qualification.
- Other postgraduate Master's degrees in related Experimental Sciences: 3 points per qualification.
- National academic awards or distinctions: 2 points per item .
- Training or professional placements in international public or private R&D;&I; centres: 1 point per month , up to 10 points.
- Training or professional placements in national public or private R&D;&I; centres: 0.5 points per month , up to 5 points.

3. Other Merits – Maximum 10 points

- C2: 10 points
- C1: 5 points

Other non-national languages:

- B1 or higher: 2 points per qualification, up to a maximum of 4 points.

4. Personal Interview – Maximum 20 points

The interview will only be conducted with candidates who obtain at least 55 points in sections 1–3 .

Candidates will receive at least 48 hours' notice of the interview.

The interview will assess:

- Initiative and teamwork skills – maximum 4 points.
- Ability to present and communicate results – maximum 4 points.
- Knowledge of the languages included in the application – maximum 4 points.
- Suitability of the candidate's profile and skills for the functions of the position – maximum 4 points.

Selection process

Applicants must submit:

- Required academic qualification: Copy of the Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Medicine.
- Supporting documentation for all specific requirements and merits claimed in the selection process.

Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by an official Spanish translation and, where applicable, the corresponding homologation or declaration of equivalence .

Reserve List

Unsuccessful candidates may be included in a reserve list to cover the position in the event that the initially selected candidate resigns or the position becomes vacant during the contract period. Probationary Period

The contract will be subject to a two-month probationary period , provided that the contract duration exceeds two months.
