We form a modest sized team and hence have a small turnaround of ski/snowboard instructing staff from one year to the next, but we are always happy to receive new applications due to the dynamic nature of the industry.

Essential requirements for your application are:

-

- Enthusiasm for being with clients on the slopes in all weather conditions

- Punctual and well presented and above all, your own character!

- European passport (even better if you have Spanish residency with NIE)*

- Recognised qualification e.G. BASI, CASI, NZSIA etc. (even better if you have the Spanish TD1 or TD2 qualification)

Also of value but not essential:

-

- Dual Qualifications – We are very interested in anyone with both ski and snowboard qualifications.

- Adaptive ski qualifications – Sierra Nevada is very well equipped to cater for disabled skiing.

- Conversant in other languages – we teach fundamentally in English but Sierra Nevada receives many different nationalities from Scandinavia, Russia, Portugal and Asia.

- Experience working with children – our principle clientele are families who love the convenient setup and ski terrain that Sierra Nevada has to offer making it a very safe environment for their children.

*Unfortunately with the issues arising around “Brexit” facing applicants with British passports looking for work overseas, you are required to apply for a work permit which by all accounts is not a rapid process. A prime issue lies in the process involving having to convince the authorities of the country of application, that there is no‑one available in their country who is capable of doing your job. You should check with your closest Spanish embassy/consulate for more details on how to go about this. Alternatively there are legal advisors who can also do this on your behalf (at a cost of course). Until you have been granted a work permit we will not be able to consider your application.

Our recruiting period tends to commence in the Autumn when we anticipate hearing from all existing staff members as to whether or not they will be returning with us for the coming season. Please feel free send in your applications at any time although we may not have a definitive response for you.

CVs will be reviewed, and decisions are generally made on the basis of your national status for travel and work abroad, your qualifications, experience, additional languages as well as any potential for working more than just one season. This does not mean, however, that first year instructors will not be considered. On the contrary, and in line with our general work dynamic, fresh enthusiasm and motivation are key driving forces to any team in terms of guaranteeing quality instruction to our clients!

Other important considerations for working in Sierra Nevada are:

- You will need to apply (well in advance) for a Spanish foreigners ID number (“NIE”) and a Social security number. Appointments for these can be made online – see more details further down this page. Without a valid TIE/NIE and social security number,



we will not be able to contract you. Again, there are legal advisors based in the UK who may be able to do much of this for you given the potential language barrier!

- Accommodation: we do not have staff lodgings for which you will need to source accommodation for yourself. It is more convenient to be based in resort but there are (cheaper) options available in the nearby localities of Pinos Genil, Güejar Sierra, Cenes de la Vega and Granada. By staying out of resort you will need to consider transport each day. There are usually plenty of resort workers who group together for shared rides up which cuts the petrol and parking costs down significantly. Social media groups are available for this for finding flat mates, travel mates etc.
For apartment rentals in Sierra Nevada, do note that the full amount of the season’s accommodation is usually required in advance. Agencies will also charge a deposit on top of the rental fee to be returned at the end of season after deducting all final electric bills and other expenses.
Rental rates in resort vary greatly from one apartment type/agent/owner to another. Rentals out of resort in Granada or the valley villages (Pinos Genil, Güejar Sierra) are generally lower cost (300€-500€ p/month depending on the size) but then you will need to consider transport to/from resort. In all rental cases, electricity bills are separate.

- Ski pass: If you have a Spanish qualification (“Técnico Deportivo”), we will cover the cost for your lift pass. If you are qualified outside of the Spanish system, we will cover 50% of the total cost. The additional 50% will be discounted from your salary in equal amounts over the confirmed working period.

- We are a small team and generally only need one full-time snowboard instructor on our team due to having relatively few snowboard lessons in comparison to skiing. As such we rarely need snowboard instructors. Instructors qualified in both ski and snowboard tuition however, are much more sought after.

- There will be specific periods such as Xmas/New Year and the two February half term weeks when you will be expected to work daily without a day off. This becomes highly intense on body and mind. Time off to compensate will be factored in before and after these periods! Christmas and New years days are working days and you will be expected to be available.

- You will need to open a Spanish or Euro bank account to be paid into.

How do we work?

Our work philosophy/structure is simple:

- You turn up well presented, on time each day and for each class with a smile!

- All clients are treated with the same professional enthusiasm.

- We teach in all weather conditions (hot/cold, cloudy/sunny, snowing/raining and so on) so long as the ski lifts are open.

- You are here to ski/ride, so when there are few classes,



please go and ski/ride!

- You are here because you want to spend as much of your time on the mountain and the slopes skiing/riding whether it be teaching or free skiing.

- When you need extra time off just ask us and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. But remember you are here to work!

- We encourage you to sell yourselves to the people you meet in resort, on the lifts, in the bars etc. The more work you get the more you earn and we will even commission you on lessons that you bring in to the school.

- We will even pay you! ;

How to prepare

-

- If you are offered a position with us, in order to legally employ you, you will need to obtain a NIE/TIE number (Número/Tarjeta de Identificación de Extranjeros) at the local police in Granada:

The address is: Calle San Agapito nº 2, C.P. 18013 Granada. Contact numbers are: / / (English is not widely spoken!). You will need to make an appointment (online) well in advance! Do note they assign a limited number of appointments each week which open up at a specified time for which you need to be quick to access the system at that point to avoid missing out.

Once you have you appointment, download and complete the necessary tax payment form and then take it in with the necessary documentation (photos, passport, confirmation of employment letter, tax payment receipt etc.).

Once you have your NIE/TIE, you will also need to arrange a “Social Security” number which we will be able to assist with via our legal team. More details will be provided upon acceptance of employment.

Once you have your appointments confirmed, you should allow at least a week before starting work to ensure you obtain the necessary paperwork for us to contract you. Spanish beaurocracy can be tedious and more time may be necessary!

- Try to travel out a couple of weeks before starting work in order to prepare for the above as well as getting some ski time in to familiarise yourself with the resort. Typically speaking we anticipate needing instructors as from the start of the Christmas school holidays.

- April is a funny month and varies in terms of work load depending greatly on the fall of the Easter holidays. Generally speaking we would expect to have work into the middle of the month. April is a fantastic time for free skiing/riding when workloads start dropping off.

- The number of hours you may expect to be doing also depends very much on the season itself, the snow fall, weather conditions, number of visitors etc.* However on average, we expect to provide you with over 350 hours of classes during the season.

- Wages are paid as an hourly rate for the lessons that you give. The amount for this will be confirmed upon offer of a position with us.

*IMPORTANT: Ski Instructing will not make you rich financially although you should come out of a season “comfortable”. xhfqzwm It is rich in lifestyle and life experience whilst providing enough to cover your costs and take home some extra funds too! If you are under any impression that you will walk away at the end of season with a flourishing bank account, we recommend you consider another vocation!111
