We are working with a fast-growing data intelligence firm. They turn complex documents in mining and commodities—technical reports, feasibility studies, filings across TSX and ASX regimes, and geological archives—into validated, normalised, provenance-traced data that investment banks, private equity funds, and mining companies rely on. The industry currently lacks standardisation. With data scattered across different exchanges, units changing by commodity and jurisdiction, and lengthy feasibility studies filled with nested, inconsistent tables, this company has built the critical extraction, validation, and normalisation layer. They process around 360 metrics, including complex derived calculations like NPV, IRR, and NPV to CapEx—the exact figures banks require for benchmarking. Clients access this data via their platform, a public API, and an MCP server that integrates directly with their own AI tools. They currently have nearly a dozen paying clients, ongoing paid pilots, a proof of concept with a major integral mining player, and secured funding backed by investors with a track record of exiting businesses in this sector. This is not a GPT wrapper; the model is a tool, and the dataset is the product.
About the Role
We are looking for a CTO and senior technical leader to partner with the technical founder. While the founder owns the core data architecture, he needs a strategic partner to run the engineering organisation, manage investor due diligence, and share the load of key technical decision-making. We are not looking for a duplicate of the founder, but rather the person who can build the ecosystem around him. This is a role for an architect and a team builder who can navigate between strategy and hands‑on execution.
Responsibilities
Build the team.
Your first measurable outcome is hiring autonomous senior engineers who own problems end‑to‑end. You will define the hiring standards, processes, and organisational decisions in a company that prioritises a small, high‑density team.
Run engineering. Establish cohesion and delivery rhythms. From standups to ownership structures, you will implement the durable processes that allow for visibility and consistent output.
Set technical direction. Define the product roadmap for the next 12–24 months, manage the buy‑vs‑build decisions, and architect support for new verticals, starting with oil and gas.
Be a genuine peer to the technical founder. Engage in deep architectural discussions, challenge assumptions, and reach joint decisions that you both stand behind.
Represent the company. Serve as the technical face of the firm during investor due diligence, enterprise client meetings, and integration discussions, serving as a key point of contact for stakeholders.
Stay in the code. This is a hands‑on technical role. You will continue to architect, review, and build alongside the team.
Qualifications
Built and owned production systems that turned unstructured sources into structured, high‑value data where accuracy was critical.
Worked at significant data scale, ideally for financial institutions or similar demanding audiences.
Led engineering in a Series A–C environment within the last five years, maintaining hands‑on contributions throughout.
Hired and developed senior engineering talent.
Managed cross‑functional engineering teams across multiple time zones.
Required Skills
Experience with entity resolution, master data, or identifier systems used to reconcile conflicting source data.
Named ownership of a public API’s data contract or accountability for accuracy SLAs.
Experience in other regulated, document‑heavy verticals such as supply chain risk, sanctions, carbon ratings, healthcare claims, or credit data.
Publicly shared thought leadership on data lineage, provenance, or evaluation of extraction systems.
Proven ability to hold your own in investor‑level technical deep dives.
Mining experience is not required. The team values fresh perspectives, and experience in energy, oil and gas, or industrials is a plus, not a requirement.
Preferred Skills
This is not a role for someone accustomed to static, large‑organisation environments. It is not a role where headcount growth is the solution to delivery problems; the company intends to stay lean and leverage modern AI capabilities. This is not a role for corporate communication styles; you will be working with direct, highly intelligent founders who prefer clarity over jargon. This is not a role for someone who needs to rewrite everything they inherit. You will collaborate with a founder who has deep domain context, and success depends on quickly discerning where to innovate and where to align.
Pay range and compensation package
Competitive base salary plus meaningful equity (vesting). The specific title (CTO or technical co‑founder) is flexible, as the company is focused on finding the right leader to help shape the business structure.
Equal Opportunity Statement
The company is committed to diversity and inclusivity.
