About Altum Sequencing
Altum Sequencing is a precision oncology company developing next-generation solutions for longitudinal cancer monitoring using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Our technology combines molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics, software and AI to detect and monitor minimal residual disease (MRD) from circulating tumour DNA. We are now building Altum Atlas , our software platform designed to orchestrate and scale these capabilities across laboratories, clinicians and research partners.
We are looking for a Software & AI Engineer with a PhD to join our technology team and contribute to the next generation of our AI, bioinformatics and software platform.
The position is intended to be submitted under the Torres Quevedo 2026 programme , subject to candidate and project eligibility and final grant approval.
The Role
You will work at the intersection of AI, software engineering, bioinformatics and precision oncology , helping transform research-grade algorithms and genomic workflows into robust, scalable and validated software.
Your work will span from developing ML models capable of distinguishing ultra-low-frequency tumour signals from technical noise to deploying them within the production infrastructure supporting Altum's NGS workflows and Atlas platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop AI/ML models for genomic data: Design, train and benchmark models to improve the detection of ultra-low allele frequency tumour signals in circulating tumour DNA and distinguish biological signal from technical noise.
- Move research into production: Translate experimental models into reproducible production systems using robust software engineering and MLOps practices, including versioning, testing, monitoring and benchmarking.
- Contribute to Altum Atlas: Develop software components, APIs and data architectures supporting genomic workflows, longitudinal patient data and decentralised laboratory operations.
- Integrate laboratory and bioinformatics workflows: Build and maintain interfaces between bioinformatics pipelines, databases, cloud infrastructure and laboratory systems, including LIMS integrations.
- Work across disciplines: Collaborate closely with bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, laboratory scientists, software engineers and Quality/Regulatory specialists.
- Build for regulated environments: Contribute to software development and documentation practices aligned with ISO 13485, IEC 62304, IVDR, GDPR and applicable EU AI regulation.
What We Are Looking For
- PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Data Science or another relevant quantitative discipline.
- Strong Python programming skills and good command of Bash/Linux environments.
- Experience developing and evaluating Machine Learning models.
- Ability to work with complex, high-dimensional and noisy datasets.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure; AWS is preferred.
- Understanding of modern software engineering and MLOps practices.
- Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases and API development.
- Strong analytical skills and a rigorous approach to reproducibility, testing and technical documentation.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary scientific and engineering environment.
- Professional working proficiency in English.
Nice to Have
- Experience with NGS, genomics or bioinformatics pipelines.
- Experience analysing FASTQ/BAM/VCF or related genomic data formats.
- Familiarity with LIMS or laboratory automation systems.
- Experience developing software in regulated healthcare or medical-device environments.
- Knowledge of ISO 13485, IEC 62304 and/or IVDR.
- Experience with GPU acceleration, parallel computing or large-scale model benchmarking.
