Mechanical Technical Lead – Hyperscale Data CentresLocation flexible / home-based, subject to confirmationSalary open to discussionLead the technical development and assurance of complex airside and waterside cooling systems for hyperscale data centres.This is a senior mechanical engineering role for someone who understands process cooling in detail, can challenge consultant designs and improve reliability, efficiency and standardisation across a major data centre programme.About the roleYou will strengthen the day-to-day capacity of the Mechanical Engineering team, reviewing and developing mechanical systems across new-build, live and evolving hyperscale data centre environments.The role combines detailed technical review, consultant management, value engineering, reliability analysis and continuous improvement of standard designs.Key responsibilitiesReview and develop airside and waterside mechanical systems for hyperscale data centresAssess evaporative and non-evaporative process cooling solutionsReview campus plans, general arrangements, CFD studies, noise models and climate dataComplete or review hydraulic analysis, pipe sizing and bin-hour evaluationsProvide technical direction to Architect/Engineer design consultantsPeer review drawings, specifications, calculations, models and sequences of operationIdentify value engineering opportunities without compromising resilienceAnalyse redundancy, failure modes and single points of failureWork with RAM specialists to verify reliability,
availability and maintainabilityDevelop conceptual CAD or BIM sketches to communicate technical solutionsSupport upgrades and improvements to critical operational infrastructureCoordinate construction-originated engineering issues and feed lessons back into standard designsProduce clear technical presentations using Google SlidesUse Excel and Google Sheets for engineering calculations and technical analysisRecord and close engineering issues through internal tracking systemsRequirementsStrong mechanical engineering experience within hyperscale data centresDetailed design experience with evaporative and non-evaporative cooling systemsStrong understanding of data centre mechanical topologyExperience with hydraulic and stress-modelling toolsDetailed knowledge of both airside and waterside systemsExperience reviewing consultant designs and resolving technical commentsStrong understanding of redundancy, failure modes and single points of failureAble to communicate complex engineering issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholdersConfident working across design, construction, operations and change-management teamsWater quality managementCorrosion or fouling preventionCFD and acoustic modellingCAD or BIM for conceptual design workExperience improving repeatable or standardised data centre designsBest-Fit Candidates / Useful Matching ContextLikely target titles include Mechanical Technical Lead, Lead Mechanical Engineer, Principal Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Design Lead, Mechanical SME, Critical Cooling Lead, Data Centre Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Technical Programme Manager.Relevant backgrounds may include hyperscale and colocation data centres, semiconductor facilities, pharmaceutical plants, advanced manufacturing or other mission-critical environments with complex cooling and hydronic systems.Strong candidates are likely to come from general engineering consultancies, data centre developers, major technology companies, specialist MEP contractors or client-side critical infrastructure teams.
