Mechanical Technical Lead – Hyperscale Data Centres
Location flexible / home-based, subject to confirmation
Salary open to discussion
Lead the technical development and assurance of complex airside and waterside cooling systems for hyperscale data centres.
This is a senior mechanical engineering role for someone who understands process cooling in detail, can challenge consultant designs and improve reliability, efficiency and standardisation across a major data centre programme.
About the role
You will strengthen the day-to-day capacity of the Mechanical Engineering team, reviewing and developing mechanical systems across new-build, live and evolving hyperscale data centre environments.
The role combines detailed technical review, consultant management, value engineering, reliability analysis and continuous improvement of standard designs.
Key responsibilities
- Review and develop airside and waterside mechanical systems for hyperscale data centres
- Assess evaporative and non-evaporative process cooling solutions
- Review campus plans, general arrangements, CFD studies, noise models and climate data
- Complete or review hydraulic analysis, pipe sizing and bin-hour evaluations
- Provide technical direction to Architect/Engineer design consultants
- Peer review drawings, specifications, calculations, models and sequences of operation
- Identify value engineering opportunities without compromising resilience
- Analyse redundancy, failure modes and single points of failure
- Work with RAM specialists to verify reliability, availability and maintainability
- Develop conceptual CAD or BIM sketches to communicate technical solutions
- Support upgrades and improvements to critical operational infrastructure
- Coordinate construction-originated engineering issues and feed lessons back into standard designs
- Produce clear technical presentations using Google Slides
- Use Excel and Google Sheets for engineering calculations and technical analysis
- Record and close engineering issues through internal tracking systems
Requirements
- Strong mechanical engineering experience within hyperscale data centres
- Detailed design experience with evaporative and non-evaporative cooling systems
- Strong understanding of data centre mechanical topology
- Experience with hydraulic and stress-modelling tools
- Detailed knowledge of both airside and waterside systems
- Experience reviewing consultant designs and resolving technical comments
- Strong understanding of redundancy, failure modes and single points of failure
- Able to communicate complex engineering issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Confident working across design, construction, operations and change-management teams
- Water quality management
- Corrosion or fouling prevention
- CFD and acoustic modelling
- CAD or BIM for conceptual design work
- Experience improving repeatable or standardised data centre designs
Best-Fit Candidates / Useful Matching Context
Likely target titles include Mechanical Technical Lead, Lead Mechanical Engineer, Principal Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Design Lead, Mechanical SME, Critical Cooling Lead, Data Centre Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Technical Programme Manager.
Relevant backgrounds may include hyperscale and colocation data centres, semiconductor facilities, pharmaceutical plants, advanced manufacturing or other mission-critical environments with complex cooling and hydronic systems.
Strong candidates are likely to come from integral engineering consultancies, data centre developers, major technology companies, specialist MEP contractors or client-side critical infrastructure teams.
