Senior/Lead Embedded Systems Engineer – Aerospace
Location: Madrid, Spain
We are looking for a Senior/Lead Embedded Systems Engineer to join a growing engineering team developing advanced unmanned systems for demanding operational environments. This is a hands-on, systems-focused position for an engineer who understands both embedded software and the hardware it runs on. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop, integrate, and debug software that interacts directly with sensors, communications equipment, and other onboard electronics.
The role will involve working across the boundary between software and hardware, making it well suited to someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems at the system level
Key Responsibilities
Embedded Software Development
- Develop and maintain embedded Linux software for onboard systems
- Develop low-level software that interfaces directly with sensors, cameras, communications equipment, and other hardware
- Implement and work with hardware communication protocols including SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN.
- Debug and resolve issues spanning both software and hardware components
- Optimise system performance, reliability, and real-time behaviour.
- Contribute to software architecture, system integration, and overall platform development.
Hardware & System Integration
- Work closely with electronics and hardware engineers during board bring-up and system integration
- Diagnose issues at the interface between embedded software, electronics, and hardware
- Analyse technical documentation including schematics and component datasheets.
- Support the integration and validation of new hardware and system capabilities.
- Contribute to the development of robust solutions for deployment in demanding environments.
Requirements
- 4+ years of low-level programming, ideally using C and/or C++
- Professional experience developing embedded systems.
- Experience with RTOS, bare-metal development, or other real-time embedded environments.
- Practical experience working with hardware interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN
- Ability to interpret schematics, datasheets, and hardware documentation
- Understanding of how embedded software interacts with processors, peripherals, sensors, and other electronics.
- Strong systems-level thinking and the ability to troubleshoot problems beyond the software layer.
- Comfortable working collaboratively with hardware, electronics, and software engineers.
What’s On Offer
Competitive salary
- (€45-65k)Opportunity to work on advanced unmanned and autonomous technology
- Hands-on involvement with complex embedded systems and hardware
- The chance to work on technology deployed in real-world operational environments
- High levels of technical ownership and responsibility
- Collaboration with engineers across software, electronics, hardware, and systems disciplines
- A fast-moving, engineering-focused environment where your work has a direct impact on deployed products
