NYU Madrid is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach Cultures and Contexts: Spain, sponsored by the College Core Curriculum of NYU’s College of Arts and Science.

The lecturer will teach in the Spring semesters, beginning in Spring 2027 (mid January - early May 2027).

The course is taught in English.

Candidates must be legally able to work in Spain at the time of application.

Cultures and Contexts

Cultures and Contexts prepares students for life in a globalized world by introducing them to the ways in which humans come to understand themselves as members of social, religious, national, and regional collectives and by fostering their appreciation of the dynamics of cultural interaction and influence.

Individual sections focus on specific social or cultural groups different from the dominant traditions of contemporary North America.

They share a common concern to examine the ways cultures have interacted, for example, through trade, colonization, immigration, religious dispersion, and media representation; how such groups define themselves against internal and external difference; and how the dominant perspective of Western modernity affects comprehension of the ways in which people outside that position understand, experience, and imagine their lives.

Offerings include emergent traditions, diaspora formations, and societies understood as nationally, geographically, or culturally distinct from the dominant traditions of contemporary North America.

Courses focusing on ancient civilizations are also included, as are courses that address contemporary challenges to traditional European conceptions of national identity.

Course Description

Cultures and Contexts: Spain explores the cultural processes through which Spain has imagined, contested, and transformed itself from the nineteenth century to the present.

Rather than approaching “Spanish culture” as a fixed collection of national traditions or artistic masterpieces, the course examines culture as a dynamic field of debate over identities, histories, memories, and social belonging.

How have artists, filmmakers, architects, writers,



and intellectuals understood Spain’s place between empire and democracy, tradition and modernity, Europe and the broader Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds?

How have competing visions of nation, region, language, religion, gender, and class shaped the meanings attached to “Spain” itself?

And how have external views of Spain—from romantic exoticism to narratives of backwardness, crisis, or cosmopolitanism—informed the country’s own cultural self-understanding?

Through close engagement with primary documents of Spanish cultural expression—including film, visual culture, architecture, photography, performance, music, media, and public culture—students investigate the ways cultural works both reflect and actively produce social and political realities.

The course traces major historical transformations including the decline of empire, the crises of modernization, the Spanish-American War, the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War, the Franco dictatorship, the democratic transition, and contemporary debates surrounding historical memory, migration, tourism, regional nationalism, and globalization.

Throughout, we ask how cultural forms participate in larger struggles over who belongs, whose histories matter, and how collective life is imagined.

The course places particular emphasis on Madrid as both a resource and an object of analysis.

Museums, archives, monuments, neighborhoods, theaters, parks, and urban spaces become sites through which students examine how culture is produced, displayed, institutionalized, and contested in everyday life.

Whenever possible, the class connects directly with the city’s cultural programming and material spaces in order to understand Spain not only through texts and images, but also through lived experience and the urban environment itself.

The lecturer should hold a Ph.D. in a field such as Spanish Studies, Cultural Studies, Visual and Performance Studies, Anthropology, History, or other related field.

Experience as a student or teaching in a U.S. college or university is preferred.
