Job Title:Research support engineer - Development of atmospheric emission models (RE1-RE2)Reference:347_26_ES_AC_RE2Closing Date:Tuesday, 11 August, 2026Starting Date:15/9/2026OverviewThe Atmospheric Composition group in the Earth Science department of BSC-CNS seeks a research support engineer to develop, maintain, and update the in‑house atmospheric emission model HERMES. The role covers database development, methodology improvement, model validation and support of air quality modelling activities. The engineer will collaborate with atmospheric scientists, computational engineers and data providers to produce emission databases and contribute to scientific outputs.Key DutiesUpdate and develop the databases underlying the HERMES emission modelDevelop methodologies to update and improve emission estimatesProvide quality assessment, evaluation and services of the HERMES emission modelSupport the implementation and application of the emission modelling tools in air‑quality modelling activitiesInteract with computational engineers and atmospheric composition scientistsSupport dissemination activities including contributions to peer‑reviewed publications, internal and external meetings and conferencesRequirementsEducationMaster’s degree in physical sciences or engineering (e.G., Chemistry, Meteorology, Physics, Environmental Engineering,



Chemical Engineering)Essential Knowledge and Professional ExperienceExperience in emission and/or air quality modellingExperience with GIS data and toolsExperience in programming and code development (Python and/or R)Experience working in Unix/Linux environmentsFluent English, both written and spokenAdditional Knowledge and Professional ExperienceExperience in similar fields will be valuedExperience with revision control systems (e.G., SVN or Git)Knowledge of atmospheric science data formats (GRIB, Net CDF)CompetencesVery good interpersonal skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlinesAbility to work both independently and in a teamConditionsLocation: BSC, Earth Sciences DepartmentFull‑time contract (35 h/week)State‑of‑the‑art infrastructure, versátil working hours, extensive training planRestaurant tickets, private health insurance, relocation supportDuration: Open‑ended contract linked to project and budget durationHolidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st December (per collective agreement)Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experienceStarting date: 15/9/2026Equal OpportunityBSC-CNS is an equal‑opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
