As the HV Substation Lead, you will play a pivotal role in the engineering and delivery of MV/HV substations for our general utility-scale renewable energy project portfolio. You will lead the complete substation engineering lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through procurement support, construction, commissioning, energization, and final handover. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, utilities, TSOs/DSOs, suppliers, and project stakeholders, you will ensure technical excellence, grid compliance, and successful delivery of complex substation projects.

While based in Spain, this position offers the opportunity for international travel to project sites, supporting our Solar PV, BESS, Wind, and Hybrid projects across multiple markets. Key Responsibilities

Lead the engineering and technical design of MV and HV substations for utility-scale renewable energy projects.

Manage the complete substation engineering lifecycle from concept design through detailed engineering, construction support, commissioning, and project close-out.

Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams including primary, secondary, protection & control, civil, structural,



mechanical and electrical disciplines.

Review and approve single-line diagrams (SLDs), protection philosophies, equipment layouts, cable routing, earthing systems, lightning protection, and auxiliary systems.

Lead the engineering of AIS and GIS substations, power transformers, switchgear, protection relays, SCADA interfaces, and grid connection facilities.

Ensure compliance with client specifications, grid codes, IEC, IEEE, CIGRE, ENTSO-E, and applicable international standards.

Coordinate technical interfaces with Transmission System Operators (TSOs), Distribution System Operators (DSOs), utilities, Independent Engineers, Owner's Engineers, consultants, and EPC partners.

Support procurement by preparing technical specifications, reviewing vendor documentation, evaluating bids, and participating in technical clarifications.

Review supplier drawings, Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) documentation, inspection reports, and commissioning procedures.

Support construction and commissioning teams during installation, testing, energization, and handover activities.

Manage engineering schedules, technical risks, design changes, and project deliverables.

Mentor and technically guide engineers within the MV/HV engineering team.

Prepare Engineering progress reports (S-curves, dashboards,...) in conjunction with the Project Control team.





Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Engineering Managers, Procurement, Construction, SCADA, Grid Connection, and Commissioning teams. Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Minimum 10 years of experience in MV/HV substation engineering.

Minimum 5 years of experience leading engineering teams on international EPC projects.

Strong background in utility-scale Solar PV, BESS, Wind, Transmission and Distribution or Hybrid power projects.

Extensive experience with

HV substations (33kV–400kV+)

AIS & GIS substations

Power transformers

Protection & Control systems

MV/HV switchgear

HV cable systems

Earthing & Lightning Protection

Auxiliary AC/DC systems

SCADA interfaces

Grid Connection facilities

Strong understanding of international grid codes and utility requirements.

Experience reviewing protection coordination studies, short circuit studies, load flow studies, insulation coordination, and grounding studies.

Familiarity with IEC, IEEE, CIGRE, ENTSO-E, and international electrical standards.

Experience working with multidisciplinary EPC engineering teams.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Fluent English is mandatory.

Preferred

Qualifications

Professional Engineering registration (PE, CEng or equivalent).

Previous experience with international EPC contractors.

Experience delivering projects across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia, or Asia-Pacific.

Knowledge of grid compliance and utility approval processes.

Experience with digital substations (IEC 61850) is highly desirable.

Experience in owner engineering or utility-side projects is an advantage.
