Position Research Engineer – Language Models for Science (RE3) Job title Research Engineer – Language Models for Science (RE3) About BSC The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress.
BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D; into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

Context And Mission The BSC AI Institute is the artificial intelligence institute of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), created to unify and accelerate AI research across the center's scientific disciplines. It combines BSC's expertise in high-performance computing (HPC) with cutting-edge AI to address major scientific and societal challenges. This position is part of our research line on Artificial Intelligence and Language Models for Science.
The successful candidate will contribute to the European project EVELYN, which focuses on the development of Multimodal Foundation Models for environmental pollution sciences.
The project aims to leverage large-scale heterogeneous data from multiple modalities to advance scientific understanding, prediction, and decision-making in environmental pollution. The candidate will work within a highly advanced HPC environment, gain access to state-of-the-art systems and computational infrastructure, and collaborate with experts across multiple disciplines at both local and international levels.
Participation in EVELYN with tasks including but not limited to research, documentation and deliverables Process multimodal data Supervision junior research engineers Preparation and writing of new scientific projects A PhD or master degree in Computer Science, Computational linguistics, Physics, Mathematics or related Demonstrated experience of at least 4 years in machine learning Linux, Python, Deep learning libraries, git, HF Demonstrated experience in developing open-source software and resources Good communication skills in English, both oral and written Good level of spoken and written Catalan and/or Spanish is not required but it is a plus We offer a full‑time contract (35h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the‑art infrastructure, versátil working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures Duration: Open‑ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration Holidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement We are pleased to consider all qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability or any other basis protected by applicable state or local law.
