About BSC

Context and Mission
We are looking for a talented and motivated researcher to join our group for a position focusing on AI-based prediction and understanding of climate variability and extremes.
This position will be hosted in the Climate Variability and Change (CVC) Group within BSC's Earth Science Department.
The CVC Group undertakes fundamental research to: (1) understand climate variability and change, including extremes; (2) investigate global biogeochemical dynamics and carbon removal technologies; (3) develop new Earth System modeling capabilities; (4) improve prediction of climate variations from monthly to multi-decadal timescales, globally and regionally.
This work will contribute to the Horizon Europe project EXPECT, which aims at developing integrated prediction and attribution of regional climate changes including extremes.
The successful candidate will develop and apply AI-based methods to predict climate variations and extremes, interpret feature contributions to generate physical process understanding, and assess the roles of different climate drivers.
Key Duties
- Develop and apply data-driven tools for predicting climate and climate extremes
- Apply explainable AI methods to quantify the roles of different climate drivers
- Evaluate predictability and feature importance in climate models compared to observational data
Requirements
Education
PhD in atmospheric or climate sciences, physics, data science, applied mathematics, or a related discipline.
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience in applying Machine Learning methods to climate science problems
- Demonstrated experience in the analysis of large climate model ensemble data
- Proven ability to prepare and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Programming skills: scripting (e.g. bash, Python), data analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, NCO, R, Python)
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Interest and capacity to participate in writing research and computing proposals
- Knowledge of version control systems (git, svn, …)
Competences
- Fluency in spoken and written English, other European languages valued
- Highly collaborative spirit and ability to work in a large, coordinated team with knowledge sharing
Conditions
The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.
Full-time contract (37.5h/week) with state-of-the-art infrastructure, versátil hours, training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and relocation support.
Duration: Open-ended contract tied to project and budget.
Holidays: 22 days + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December.
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience and cost of living in Barcelona.
Starting date: 16/9/2026.
