Three hospitals, one week, same problem

NNU says 8 in 10 nurses faced workplace violence in the past year. This week made the number feel concrete:

- Augusta, GA — two Piedmont nurses were beaten so badly they missed weeks of work; a 74-year-old man turned himself in.
- Warren, MI — a man allegedly pulled a gun on three Henry Ford Warren workers on their overnight break. They ran; he was later arrested.
- Shreveport, LA — a patient cleared for discharge refused to leave, then spit on one ER nurse and kicked another. Two counts of battery of ER personnel.

- At a Chattanooga hospital, AI-powered diversion software missed months of leftover-fentanyl theft, per a state nursing board order.




- What finally flagged it? Anesthesia coworkers noticed a nurse slurring and struggling to stay awake. Humans, not the algorithm.
- The so-what: hospitals don’t have to disclose this software or report when it fails. If your unit leans on it, treat it as a backup to your eyes — not a replacement.
