About CSIRO

As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is solving the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Many of our iconic innovations were once considered impossible until someone, just like you, joined us and took on the challenge.

Our Undergraduate Vacation Studentships are run over the Australian summer holiday period. Our program offers promising undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in real world projects, collaborate with leading CSIRO researchers and experience our world class facilities.

Participation in a CSIRO Vacation Studentship offers access to real world experience that provide insights into future study and career directions. Many previous vacation students have gone on to pursue a PhD and build a successful research career within CSIRO, universities, or industry.

CSIRO’s Mineral Resourcesunit is one of the largest minerals research and development groups in the world, with a proud track record in delivering innovation and solutions across the mineral resources value chain. Our innovation unlocks the value of Australia's natural resource base and delivers a more productive, lower cost, socially and environmentally responsible general minerals industry.

Position duties and responsibilities:

Mineral Resources currently have several projects available across a range of disciplines including astronomy, astrophysics, physics, computer science, data science, electrical and telecommunications engineering, software engineering, signal and image processing, machine learning, and related fields.

Refer to the Mineral Resources Project List for specific details regarding Project 11: Impurity Controls on Goethite Formation and Crystallinity:

Integrating Mineral Synthesis, XRD and Synchrotron Data Interpretation.

Knowledge and skills:

This Vacation Studentship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in environmental mineralogy, geochemistry, and advanced materials characterisation within CSIRO Mineral Resources. The student will investigate how phosphorus, aluminium and silicon influence the formation and crystallinity of iron (oxyhydr)oxide minerals relevant to sustainable iron ore processing. The project combines laboratory mineral synthesis with interpretation of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) datasets, providing practical experience in modern analytical techniques, scientific data analysis and mineralogical interpretation

Suitable for students with at least 2 years (or equivalent) full-time study in Geology, Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related discipline.

An interest in mineralogy, geochemistry, crystallography or materials characterisation is desirable. The successful applicant should be comfortable working in a laboratory environment, have good analytical and problem-solving skills, and be able to communicate scientific findings effectively. All required laboratory safety training will be provided prior to commencing experimental work.

As the successful candidate, you will need:

- To be enrolled in an undergraduate course at an Australian Tertiary institution (eg: FedUni)

- Have completed at least 1 year (full-time equivalent) of an undergraduate course at the commencement of the studentship.

- A strong academic record (credit average or higher)

and/or known capability in the field.

- An interest in pursuing a research career in science or technology, or a career in a related discipline.

- Be available to undertake a learning and development placement for 8 to 12 weeks over the summer vacation period.

(NOTE: 12 weeks required to meet Co-op Placement requirements for academic credit).

Additional requirements:

Location: Clayton, Brisbane and Perth (refer to the project list for specific details).

Stipend: $2,056.32 per fortnight
