Deadly Shooting Inside Delaware Hospital — Suspect Was Fired That Same Day A 23-year-old employee opened fire inside ChristianaCare's Wilmington Hospital on June 16, killing one coworker and critically injuring another. Both victims were 19. The suspect had been fired earlier that day and was arrested hours later in Philadelphia. Brigham Nurses Vote 99.6% to Authorize Strike — Largest in MA History

Nearly 4,000 RNs at Brigham and Women's Hospital voted 2,798 to 12 to authorize a one-day strike. The MNA calls it the largest nurse strike authorization vote Massachusetts has ever seen. The sticking points: wages (some nurses were offered 0% raises), rising health insurance costs, and closures of specialized units. Meanwhile, Mass General Brigham reported a $2.4 billion net margin last year. No strike date is set yet — both sides returned to the table June 18.

11 Nurses With Tumors at Newton-Wellesley — Hospital Says No Workplace Link An independent investigation at Newton-Wellesley Hospital (part of Mass General Brigham) concluded that tumors found in 11 current and former maternity ward nurses were not linked to the workplace. The investigation tested for chemicals, radiation, and air and water quality. The MNA isn't buying it — the nurses' union says the testing wasn't comprehensive enough and is conducting its own review.

ER Nurse Nereida Benitez Killed on Highway After Stopping to Help Crash Victims

Nereida "Nedi" Benitez, 40,



had just finished an overnight shift at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego on June 11 and was driving home when she pulled over on I-15 to help at a crash scene. She and another Good Samaritan, Marine veteran Chad Tillman, 54, were both struck and killed by a secondary collision. The driver in the initial crash has been charged with felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Benitez started her nursing career during the pandemic, worked COVID units for two years, then became an ER nurse.

Her husband said it simply: "She runs away from no battle."

Two Patients Dead Weeks Apart at Same Miami Plastic Surgery Clinic A 35-year-old mother from Kentucky went into cardiac arrest during a "mommy makeover" at Svelta Plastic Surgery in Miami on April 29 and died. Weeks later, a 19-year-old from Tennessee was declared brain dead after complications during a rhinoplasty at the same clinic. When first responders arrived for the first patient, CPR wasn't in progress and no crash cart was visible.

The clinic had operated for nearly 20 years under a different name before rebranding in January 2026. Both families are pursuing legal action.

Diploma Mill Operator Pleads Guilty Mid-Trial — Sold Nearly 3,000 Fake Nursing Degrees

Carleen Noreus, 52, ran two South Florida nursing schools that sold about 2,600 fake diplomas for $10,000 to $20,000 each between 2018 and 2023, pulling in roughly $25 million. She pleaded guilty mid-trial to wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. This is part of Operation Nightingale, which has now charged over 50 people tied to roughly 15,000 bogus nursing degrees.

For the first time, prosecutors alleged a fraudulently credentialed nurse contributed to a patient's death. Sentencing is set for September 10.

Spending Bill Would Open Nurse Corps Loan Repayment to Long-Term Care RNs For the first time, RNs who commit to working in nursing homes and assisted living could qualify for the federal Nurse Corps loan repayment program, which currently covers up to 85% of nursing education loans.

Committee added $20 million to bring proposed funding to $112.6 million and requires at least 5% be earmarked for a long-term care pathway. The bill still needs to pass the full House and Senate, but providers are already calling it a meaningful workforce investment.

NP Sentenced to 87 Months for $12 Million Medicare Fraud

Scharmaine Lawson Baker, 59, a Louisiana NP who literally wrote books about Medicare compliance, was sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for ordering millions of dollars in medically unnecessary cancer genetic tests in exchange for kickbacks. Between 2018 and 2019, she signed off on tests for patients she never examined through a telehealth company. She was also ordered to pay over $1.5 million in restitution.

Young Nurses Are No Longer the Most Burned-Out Group, New Data Show

This is a reversal from 2022, when nurses under 25 reported the highest burnout rates in the profession. New data from the 2026 Nurse.com Salary and Work-Life Report shows that overall reported burnout dropped to 53%, down from 59% in 2024 — and younger nurses are no longer the group carrying the heaviest emotional load.
