Senior Scala Engineer

Location: Remote from Spain (an indefinite Spanish employment contract)

Intellias is partnering with a Fortune 100, Midwest-based industrial manufacturer to modernize and expand a suite of cloud-based services and data products used by a general network of dealers, enterprise customers, and internal business units. Our cross-functional teams deliver scalable APIs, event-driven services, and analytics pipelines that power quoting, ordering, asset telemetry, diagnostics, and lifecycle support for heavy equipment in the field.

Requirements:

- 5+ years of experience with Scala designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining backend services and distributed systems in production.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience (preferrably Java)
- 5+ years of experience building distributed systems using Akka (Streams, Actors, HTTP, Persistence) or Apache Pekko .
- 5+ years of experience with AWS
- Strong experience designing and operating event-driven distributed systems using technologies such as Kafka , AWS Kinesis , or equivalent messaging platforms .**
- Strong experience with functional programming concepts and libraries such as Cats , Cats Effect, or ZIO.
- Hands-on experience with Docker .
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL and SQL query development.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and automated deployment pipelines (preferably GitHub Actions )
- Experience designing and operating event-driven architectures and stream-processing systems.
- Experience with microservice architectures.
- Experience working within Agile software development environments.




- Strong understanding of software architecture and solution design.
- Strong ownership mindset with the ability to independently drive complex technical initiatives.

Responsibilities:

- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Scala.
- Build reliable event-processing, notification, and integration services.
- Develop APIs and distributed system components in highly available environments.
- Deliver scalable, fault-tolerant solutions that provide business value.
- Contribute to system architecture, technical design, and engineering decisions.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues and perform root-cause analysis.
- Support integration, acceptance, and quality assurance testing activities.
- Maintain high software quality through testing, reviews, documentation, and best practices.
- Mentor engineers and promote technical excellence within the team.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders in Agile environments.
- Own services throughout their lifecycle, from design and development to deployment and production support.
- Ability to provide a 6-hour overlap with US Central Time (CT) on business days, working until 2 PM CT at the latest, which is equivalent to workin g until 9 PM Spain time.
